Hard to say what that is. Could be a bunch of them going out for testing somewhere based on the covers.

The covers are going to be the new standard. You'll start seeing more and more of them.

That's interesting, where did you get that info? No threads about that as far as I'm aware of. That would be nice if true and would be even better if we could keep them!!

Can I just order that cover from Chevy, so my Triumph Spitfire looks like a C7 while parked at the Dairy Queen? It would save me a ton of money.

It would be cool but those camo covers are huge money. It is quite the racket by whoever invented / produces them. They are however nicely configurable, adjustable and can be outfitted with padding in lots of places internally to dramatically change the look of the car. Not too mention their ability to stay on at very high speeds and maneuvers safely.

GM probably has a short line producing display vehicles. The cars probably don't have Vin numbers.

Who would have thought another Spitfire owner on the C7 forum. My first car when I was 16, still have it in the garage 25 years later:thumbs:

The C7 is going to look really good next to it. For some reason my GTR and M5 clashed with the Spitfire in the garage, but I have high hopes for the Vette:yesnod:

ArcticC7 05-09-2013 11:15 AM

These just could be a load going for a drive to see if there will be any transportation issues. Prior to this they were shipping the show cars inside semi trailors. I wonder if these cars also might be factory pilots heading for Detroit for a build inspection after all this is May already.

It's GM trying to make all of us old fart typical Corvette customers feel like a kid again like back in the 50's when all through September the roads through town were full of car carriers with covered vehicles heading to dealers ahead of the big reveal date for the new models. No internet to break the secrecy of where this years chrome was applied or how many headlights the cars had. :D

Neat... my guess is GM will be transporting the cars with covers now. Many luxury brands do this or something similar. Jaguars are shipped with a special spray on protective film that takes a special chemical to wash it off.

An insightful post.

The C7 is the pace car. The race is in a couple of weeks. The race needs mini fleet of identical cars. If this were a random rainbow assortment of colors why cover them up? That cow has left the barn.

A lot of car carriers leak oils and hydro. fluid all over cars when they haul them. And lots of dead bugs and road dirt get on the cars during shipping. Maybe the car covers are there to help protect the cars from all that shipping dirt, bug guts, grease, and oils.

those are just shells. gm needs to make sure covers are secure enough for over the road transport without hurting finish prior to production and delivery. they sent transports out to several locations through flatlands, hills and valleys.

On the way to and fro, we see a lot of auto transport traffic. Not unusual to see transport cars with white film blockson the roof, trunk, and hood. Never seen a full cover with window holes. Trying to hide something which adds to the mystique. And gives us something to blog about.

Using state of the art computer analysis on this photo, within 94.7% degree of accuracy, it was determined this photo was taken from atop a grassy knoll. There may have been a second photographer in the Book Repository building - but no shots were taken from there . . . . .

Assembly line changeover is complete. Production (actually production validation production) has begun.

Those are clearly C7 Z51 Chrome wheels.

I don't see "wrap over glass". I see the flat back glass and the rear side windows of the C7.

What we have is clearly a truckload of C7s.

Now be honest. Have you ever had more fun in any car than you've had in the Spitfire?

Sadly, I let my 72 go in about 1980 to buy a 1962 Porsche Super90, which like a jackass I also sold in about 82 for $6000.

I can honestly say that I have had a lot of fun with cars, Vettes, Porsche, BMW, MX5, but I have never had any more fun than in the Spitfire. It was a great time of life, and a great sports car to own.

I wonder why they don't have the "boy racer" black wheels which GM was showing off at the New York show?

Could it be that "bling" is still in and most C7's will be built with chrome wheels..

Black looks odd with blue. The chrome wheels are far more fitting. Plus it's a pace car which usually has crazy graphics and bright blinking lights.

They offer black for the young buyers and chrome for the old buyers. Use the median age of Corvette buyers to predict the popularity of black vs chrome.

He doesn't work for GM and never has. I believe he works in sales for a small company in Wareham, MA that prints labels. Design-Mark Industries. He is a volunteer at the museum doing R8C deliveries and tours. His wife worked for the museum but I don't believe she does now, but not sure. Her part time job as Human Resource Administrator is currently being shown as an open position at the museum

Chrome will always be an option on Corvettes as long as the old farts who cant let go of the past are around buying them.

Thank goodness for the old farts. If black wheels were the only option on wheel finishes, sales of Corvettes would dry up.

I wonder why they don't have the "boy racer" black wheels which GM was showing off at the New York show?

Could it be that "bling" is still in and most C7's will be built with chrome wheels..

Catering to old men!:D

I'm going to be a part of opening day at the track in the morning. There is a "corvette exclusive," opportunity for approx 250+ vettes as part of opening day ceremonies. W get a lap around the track, free lunch put on by GM and are promised a look at the new c7! Stay tu Ed for posts with pics Saturday night!!!!

Ps I bet that truck was pace cars headed to Indy also! All chrome z51 wheels on 1 truck means most likely all identicle. All identicle means pace cars in my brain.

Chrome will always be an option on Corvettes as long as the old farts who cant let go of the past are around buying them.

Uh, black wheels are even older than chrome - ever heard of Henry Ford and the Model T? People who like black wheels must be REALLY old farts who can't let go of ancient history! :D

Nothing is new; it's just that each generation needs to think that they have "discovered' something newer and cooler than the previous one. Eventually they too will mature. :yesnod:

Good call Tyler..Chevrolet knows the chrome wheels make the car look better on TV. I am looking forward to your story and pictures. Maybe I should drive out there next year for this Corvette experience.

Even on the Corvette, black wheels were standard, starting in 1962. The fabulous C2's had black wheels as standard equipment though 1966. I have a matched set(5) of dated 1964 wheels in my basement, and they are black.

It was many years later(2006 C6) before the chrome wheel was available as an option on the Corvette.

Sure looks like the black wheel has been around longer on the Corvette than the chrome wheel. But once the chrome wheel became an option on the Corvette, it was the wheel of choice for most buyers.

Looks like us old folks are more inclined to accept change then the ones who jumped on the band wagon at the end of the parade.

I disagree. My 1962 Corvette had chrome wheel covers. I do not recall any black wheel Corvettes unless they took the covers off to race. The first black wheels I can recall are on Buick T types.

I want to see a brochure or advertising piece showing black wheels on a Corvette of the past. They did not sell them that way.

The wheels were still painted black on your 1962, even if they were partly covered by the flash chromed wheel covers. In 1957, the optional 5.5" wide wheels(included in RPO684) were painted black and only came with hub caps as the optional wheel did not have the wheel cover retainer bosses.

You will find a bunch of photos of a 1959 Corvette with the RPO684 option....

Notice the black wheels.

Nice museum shot but hardly representative of the time period. "Partly" is the incorrect word in my opinion. Fully. That is why they were called "full wheel covers". In fact the late 50's and early 60s saw a huge increase in chrome wheels. I could not afford them so I used aluminum paint and trim rings, along with moon dog dish caps. I will stop my argument there is nothing to gain here but hard feelings.

BlueOx 05-11-2013 08:39 AM

Hmmm, they were painted red, too.

I prefer they ship my car uncovered.....the wind has to buffet that cover and with the slightest amount of dust under there and the cover moving....got to lead to scratches and swirls in the clear coat.....and heaven forbid a dealer trying to correct this on pre-delivery.....most of the wash guys I've watched use the same mitt or sponge on the body as they do on the wheels....right after they washed that used pick up the local farmer just traded in......I never let them wash my car!!!
