Lucky to be alive

Please forgive spelling as I am medicated.*

Yesterday on the way home I was side swiped by a " black, 4 door, 4x4, dual wheel, gmc/chevy ". The truck looked new and it had a motorcycle in the bed. This truck came around a curve skidding into my lane striking me in the drivers door. The impact was insane, when I came too people were trying to free me from the car. The other driver never stopped. The fire and police told me if it was not for the roll cage I would be dead.

Sorry to hear this. Glad to see, for the most part, you're OK.

Just happened to my neighbor last week. Rear ended and the guy took off.

Hopefully they get to SOB.

Yes but like you said, "Lucky to be alive". A new car can be built. Take care of yourself.

How does that work? I have more money in the power train than the car is worth and it was running after the impact like nothing happened. look at my signiture list below.

Don-Vette 08-06-2013 10:02 AM

Wow!!! Your lucky to be alive alright!! Get all your friends to start combing the area and body shops for that truck!!!

C5North 08-06-2013 10:03 AM

Pretty clear the car can take a hell of a hit. Glad yo uare OK.

Boomer111 08-06-2013 10:03 AM

Horrendous, heal quick

By the way is this the OP lying on the grass in the second picture? ( legs only )

Mr.Nubain 08-06-2013 10:04 AM

Glad you're alright. Hopefully they gave you some solid meds :) The driver of the other car most likely was impaired, it's amazing how often sh!t like this happens. I really hate people.

FlyerVette 08-06-2013 10:08 AM

So glad you're ok Crow. What a close call you had...!! Hope they catch the idiot that did this too you so you can throw the book at him. Not to mention he drove away from a crash scene having to know what he did....

Yes that is me feeding the fire ants. The police figured he hit me doing between 55-60mph, and it rung my bell pretty good.

FloydSummerOf68 08-06-2013 10:18 AM

Same thing happened to me when a Cobra slid infront of me and sent my firebird sideways into a telephone pole. He didn't stop either.

I'm glad to see you're ok. Unfortunately the odds are they'll not catch him.

After all the C7's roll cage has to be even better than the C6.

Brockman66 08-06-2013 10:33 AM

About 6 months ago my wife and I witnessed a hit and run, we chased the a-hole and got his license plate number and reported it to the police. The police arrived at his house and he was drunk so they couldn't charge him with a DUI even though he was probably drunk while driving. He's serving 15 years in prison right now and will never be able to get a driver's license again since this wasn't his first offense. The gentleman who got rear ended had some really bad whiplash and luckily it didn't ruin the back surgery the guy had 3 months prior.

Too bad there were no witnesses there to get the guys plate number. Get well soon and good luck building your next vette.

Flh Den 08-06-2013 11:06 AM

Can't wait to see your next post where you tell us that the other driver has been caught and prosecuted.

VETJAZZ 08-06-2013 12:42 PM

How scary is that? Glad you'll be OK, the vette can be repaired or replaced. Hope they nail the other driver.

Crowhater 08-06-2013 12:48 PM

This guy would have killed me if I did not have that cage. I have a wife and 3 children that depend on me. The wife does not want me to get another Corvette.

Yes the side airbag probably saved me from breaking my neck. The front bag did not deploy because he hit me in the drivers doors. My face and neck don't feel good from the airbag impact. My whole left side feels like i fell off a building and landed on it

jtjohn1 08-06-2013 01:03 PM

If you have all of the documents regarding the work done to the car the insurance company "MAY" take that into account (They did when I hit a deer in my 1977 Trans Am awhile back. They were going to total it until I pulled out a bunch of receipts from the work I have had done to the car at which point they fixed it)

That said

I wouldn't really WANT them to fix it. I like the idea of working thru your insurance company to buy the salvage and then getting the good stuff out (To either sell separately or put into a new car)

I am happy to hear that your car saved your life. As for that guy.....lets just hope he gets what he deserves.

Heal up and like others have said, try to buy the car back and fix it or rip out the engine/tranny/rear and sell the rest of the car.

Hug your family. :)

C6Whatever 08-06-2013 01:46 PM

So glad that you are okay your angel is working over time. You are probably going to hurt more in the next couple of days than you do now. (Hate to tell you) I would definitely buy the car back and you can sell off the body panels, lights, interior, etc anything else that you don't want to keep. I understand your wife being upset but I am sure if you end up wanting another vette she will get on board. Right now relax, heal and thank God you are alive and in one piece.

Steel Curtain 08-06-2013 06:14 PM

I am glad you survived this horrendous experience.
As a specialist in Critical Care Medicine, I cannot overstate the importance of appropriate medical evaluation in these circumstances-PARTICULARLY if there was a loss of consciousness. It is commonplace to see a delay in neurological signs and symptoms following significant trauma to the Central Nervous System and cervical spine.
I assume you were evaluated in an ER? Did you have cranial and cervical spine x-rays? Were you evaluated only by the ER doc, or were you seen by a neurologist, as well?
Should you have any questions, concerns or doubts, do not hesitate to ask.

Glad you are ok. As a new Corvette owner I find it pretty dramatic to see the pic of the drivers door cracked and broken in the middle - clearly shows that those body panels really are "plastic" and not steel. You are a lucky guy. Craig

ParisTNDude 08-06-2013 06:28 PM

When you get insurance on a used car, they always ask if it's modified in any way. I wonder if your insurance company will honor the modifications if you didn't declare them after they were installed? If they don't recognize the parts, the salvage price should be very low as badly damaged as it is. Those who buy wrecks always look to see what parts are salvageable and most of those people would also recognize the value of your parts. What a dilemma you're facing. But, as others have said, "Your kids have a daddy and your wife a husband!" Thank God for that one, a split second earlier hit might have been a head on!

OnPoint 08-06-2013 06:38 PM

Crow - sorry to hear about this (and the pics are awful). Get healed up.

Hopefully the tool that hit you will be found and prosecuted.

Glad to hear that you were not seriously hurt. If your insurance company dose total the car you will have the opportunity to buy the car back from the insurance company and a very low price. You can then salvage whatever is not damaged and use or sell the parts. You will be surprised how little the insurance company will sell you the car back.

tprice 08-06-2013 07:15 PM

Main thing is you are ok, good luck with the insurance and car but take your time

Bet you they will find the other driver

AORoads 08-06-2013 08:18 PM

a few thoughts come to mind like, glad you are ok or at least recovering. I'd also follow the advice of Steel Curtain. I also think that your wife may not understand: it's the roll cage that most likely helped. most OTHER cars, no one puts a roll cage in. so what car does she think will help you out if there is ever a "next time?" which I hope there is not, of course.

finally, I hope you have, as one poster on page 1 said, talked to all your friends who have called you and said, "go look for that truck, it's got significant damage, too." the police will do relatively little other than to put out a bulletin to repair shops. being in/near country, lots of folks "repair" vehicles in their garage, have whole paint booths, some even w. downdraft setups.

good luck, heal, take your time, be well, and remember the family. and talk to every friend, business associate, business acquaintance, and relative to keep looking for you, on your behalf.

this person is a true menace to society, proven by what s/he did to you with no regard for your life, or the law.:cheers:

At the ER they put me in that x-ray tube and looked at my head and spine. They also did an ultra sound on my stomach. Today I felt like 5 miles of bad road, my urin was red coolaid color and my head felt like I went five rounds with Mike Tyson. The pics show the cage stopped the truck from pushing into the car. The initial findings on the car show it is body damage and rear suspension.

First of all, THank God your OK, thats just terrible.

I have to ask, where did you get that cage? It was clearly a very professional install, It worked great. There are many out there that are a bit sketchy, kudos to your designer.

I hope your wife backs off the anti-vett thing, if you were in a truck you would likely have rolled, thats not pretty either.

God bless

brooklync5 08-07-2013 12:25 AM

Screw the car man it means nothing in the big picture. Your here to tell the story and that's all that really matters. I hope they catch that scum bucket POS and lock his ass up. Good luck with the next one.

Nosferatu 08-07-2013 03:22 AM

Glad you got out of that okay. It's painful losing something that was your pride and joy (the car) but it's replaceable. Hopefully some information leaks regarding the guy who hit you and run. That looks like a pretty significant impact from those photos.

Sounds like your had a CT scan of the brain and cervical spine. I'm assuming they checked some basic blood work and urine. What sucks is you'll be more sore as the days go on before you start feeling better. Feel free to ask "unofficially" myself or Steel Curtain. I'm an ER doc.

Good luck!

That's why "bystanders" should not be 'pulling' people out of
wrecks - unless there's an *immediate* hazard present
(think entangled with a propane tanker, and fire in progress).

You're lucky you didn't have any injuries aggravated by them
pulling you out of the car. I used to run EMS years ago (80's), and
we had specific 'stabilization' protocols for MVA's.

Steel Curtain 08-07-2013 08:22 AM

From your description, I agree you had a Cat Scan of the brain and cervical spine. Did you have any lab work (bloods and urine)?
From your last post, it sounds like you have hematuria (blood in the urine). Most likely due to renal (kidney) trauma. This MUST be evaluated. Do NOT take aspirin or any non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (Motrin, Aleve, etc., etc.) as they can induce further bleeding.
Again, do not hesitate to contact me via PM should you have any questions, doubts or concerns.

glad you survived that mess. i hope they catch the sob and throw his ass in the slammer. hit and run drivers should go to prison no if's, and's or but's about it. happened to my wife in n.j. on route 80. new car carrier knocked her right off the road, luckily she found her phone in time to have the state police grab the bastard 15 miles away. heres wishing you a quick recovery.

Just make sure you pick the shop that repairs it...
Good luck

Look for cameras in the area. You might be able to tag them before or after the accident on a near by lot or building camera.

HOXXOH 08-07-2013 12:20 PM

Thankfully you survived the initial hit. Just don't be a macho guy and think you can tough it out without additional care. You can always fix the car later if you take care of yourself first.

Z_Monzter 08-07-2013 01:16 PM

Holly smokes that sucks. I'm glad you are ok. The car can be replace!

doubledime 08-07-2013 01:36 PM

Let us know when they find the a**hole!!

Crowhater 08-07-2013 02:41 PM

I purchased the Cage from Wolf in Dallas and did the install myself, it is a bolt in cage with a driver side swing out. At the time of the wreck I did not have the swing out installed.

I keep seeing that truck slide around the corner wnd head strait at my door. The last thing I remember is feeling the car leave the ground, then the world came back like someone snapped their fingers! People were inside the car telling me they had to remove me because the car is smoking and might catch on fire. They had to take me out the pass side and one of them was a medic in the military. He told me to relax, he said he was with me and would not let anything bad happen. I am trying to get his name as well as anyone else that helped out. They said he immobilized my spine and wrote my vitals on my forehead along with the times. I was going in and out because the x-ray tube is what I remember next, I don't remember the ride to the ER . I thought I was at Saint Luke's in the Woodlands but found out the next day I was in the woodlands.

Other than pain I have a little disorientation still but it is getting better.

Thank you for all the prayers and support it means allot. I have always been the guy that will stop and run to help people if I see an accident but I never dreamed I would be on the receiving end.

rakuhn 08-07-2013 03:58 PM

Congratulations and thank you lucky stars for surviving such a crash.

OH THREE Z 08-07-2013 11:07 PM

First of all I like the rest of us are glad that you "only" sustained injuries that seem recoverable.

It seems to me that with the power of subpoena this might be an easy case to crack. If your recollection is correct about the truck being a newer GM truck it should have Onstar and given the high rate of speed at impact I would guess that Onstar would have picked it up and contacted the driver of the truck. Given that you know the time and exact location of the collision it would seem to me that that data could be retrieved which would identify the perp.

I have never used or needed Onstar so I am for sure not an expert, this just seems like a logical way to track the pos down

Good luck

It seems to me that with the power of subpoena this might be an easy case to crack. If your recollection is correct about the truck being a newer GM truck it should have Onstar and given the high rate of speed at impact I would guess that Onstar would have picked it up and contacted the driver of the truck. Given that you know the time and exact location of the collision it would seem to me that that data could be retrieved which would identify the perp.

I have never used or needed Onstar so I am for sure not an expert, this just seems like a logical way to track the pos down

Good luck

Good Post. :yesnod:

They found a piece of the truck that hit me this morning under my car. This should help them figure out the make and Model of the truck I hope.

And to put out an alert to dealers who would be selling a replacement.

I sure hope that leads to an arrest. How about appealing to a local Tv station telling what happened and the fact that it was a black 4X4 with a motorcycle in the back. Someone would know who that belongs to if it was broadcast.

That's a really good idea since local news loves this kind of story.

I was looking at the pic of that piece that came off the offender's truck. At least in the orientation as it's on here, it appears to be the (deformed) right lower bumper/fog light area of a 2003-2007 GMC Sierra. What makes me a bit unsure is the piece looks to be chrome, and I haven't seen any trucks in google pics that are chrome in that area. If you compare the shape of that area though it makes sense. I'm impressed the OP could remember a detail that, but I think his description of the truck might be close.

This piece is black plastic that is painted a black/grey color and I was told by the body shop it comes off a Sierra. I can remember the truck because I watched it drive strait I to my door. It was like a deer in the headlights. I though for sure I was dead, the grill stopped just inches from my face when the door pushed in to the cage. The airbag deployed and the car went flying. One second I though I was dead and the next I had People pulling me out the pass side of the car. I think that cage cost me 600-700 dollars and it is pretty non intrusive, it was money well spent.

Good luck to you Crow, very glad you made it out. Keep us informed on this and when the cops catch that piece of garbage.

Crowhater 08-09-2013 04:25 PM

Well it came to $17,800 in damage. I want to either go back with a complete wide body kit or the Supervette kit. All of the magnetic ride suspension will be removed and replaced with coil over.

So which way should I go? What vendor sells the best kit? Is pfadt the best coil over for drag racing?
