How to clean a California car duster
 

What is the best way to wash a California car duster? Can I just toss it in the wash and should I use softner?

Don't think you are suppose to wash it. I always heard to just shake it out.

I washed mine simply because I thought I may have splashed brake fluid on it:rofl: . In the washing machine with some other rags, no softener or anything, just detergent. Pulled it off the handle. All the other rags came out pink:rofl: . Seems the same as it was before I washed it.

Yes, and very well. ...but only if you regularly shake it out in a Mustang.

PS-Can you shake 'em out over an open sunroof on a ricer with a coffee can muffler too?

Careful with that California stuff, next you'll be eating sushi.

Get a tub or basin of warm water. Put some Woolite in it and slosh it around to dissolve the soap (but not make a bunch of suds). Dip the cloth part of the duster into the soap solution and use your hand to squeeze the duster to get the soap working. Just keep doing this until you get most of the dirt, etc. out of the duster and into the water. Pull it out and squeeze most of the water out. Drain the basin; refill with fresh warm water. Do the process again [without soap, this time] to rinse it out. Once the water is squeezed out again, take the duster outside and turn it upside down on some newspaper and lay it in the sun to dry. It will take quite a while to dry and you may need to fluff the loops and move them around to help it dry faster. All done? Use for another 5 years. {Don't use detergent, as it will remove the parrafin in the loops. Then it won't be the "Original California Duster" anymore.}

Yes, a ricer makes a good substitute when there's no 'stang in site. However, I've found that you get better results if you locate one with dark paint and shake the dust out over the entire car. :D

I've been getting one as a Xmas gift every year for the past 15 or so years from my wife. I use the old one on the engine and wheels.

We justify it by saving at least $20 in water and time a year washing the car.

My only complaint about the CCD is that it leaves streaks when the air is humid. When the humidity is low, it works great.

I bought mine when I got my Black Cobalt SS last year. It works great on the Vette (War Bonnett Yellow) but on the Cobalt you can always see little streaks. It must be the black paint because the Vette never has streaks after use. I like it. It works good on pollen and yesterday my Cobalt was green before I used it.:thumbs:

There are also similar dusters that just don't work as good as the original CCD. You get what you pay for.

Because of a special permanently baked in paraffin treatment, The Original California Dusters are made to provide years of effective service without the need for cleaning. Simply shake them out before and after each use. The "dirtier" they get the better they work.

If you find it necessary to clean your Duster because it is too dirty or if the Duster stops lifting dust, it can be washed. You may hand wash your Duster in cold water with a mild detergent such as Woolite, then air dry. Do not use hot water to wash or hot air to dry, as heat or harsh detergent may remove the special paraffin treatment.

I keep one in each of my cars. Its a quick way to get the dust off while the engine is idleing. I like going out for my drives in a clean vette.

Plus, I keep 2 cars under car covers at my work. The amount of dust that accumulates can get pretty bad. The duster works great for this reason.

I have had one for 24 years. they work great.

15 years with mine. The more you use it the better it gets. Just shake it out. :thumbs:


Just saw this is a 7 yr old thread.

As a paint correction detailer, I usually see many people use there Cali Duster improperly , blaming the results on the duster.

You want to make sure you do not dust it off when it has been in the sun, especially black because as stated there is a parafin wax coating on the fibers and in heat it will streak the paint because the wax is melting. I have used it millions of time on black vehicles in correct conditions and it works just as advertised.

Also do not push hard down on the surface you are dusting , just gently let the fibers dangle where they just touch the vehicles paint, otherwise you will add swirl marks to the paint .:cheers:

...now a Camaro...I HAVE one. 2010 SS. 12sec factory car. Love it. The 'Vette is next, once I make up my mind what options I want.
