I prefer US manufactored filters such as Wix, Baldwin and some Purelators.

old cars,

Here's an archived thread on this very topic. Good read. I use the BALDWIN line of oil filters...specifically #1428 for my 327.

Good luck in your decision.

What's wrong with AC filter??? That is what I use on all my units. Are they not US made?

Compare the construction of a current AC 1218 and equivelent Fram HP2. They seem to be the same and Frams are offshore built. The Purelator plant in Tenn and the Baldwin plant in Kearney, Neb I have heard are the only plants making oil filters in the US.

I like the PF-35 as it is a larger filter.

Wix for me!

Years ago I saw a cutaway demo of all major filter brands and Wix definately inspired the most confidence.

Also, I like max oil capacity so I use the two quart Wix 51794.

I use Baldwin filters on everything.

Absolutely, 100%, :iagree: .
That's all I use. The WIX 51794 is actually a truck application, but is totally interchangeable with the shorter filters (just more filtering capacity). And, no need to worry about its additional length. The bottom of the filter is just about even with the bottom of the oil pan, thus, nothing hanging down lower.

I use Baldwin filters, but there are many other quality filters. Check out this analysis of oil filters done a few years ago.
Oil Filters Revealed
Don't know how accurate it is, but it is interesting reading.

oil filter

Daryl- I see you said "conversion" . I'm currently taking apart my '66 327 engine and noted that the oil filter is a large center bolt type that fits in a recess in the block . Is yours like this ? I'd like to convert my to a spin on type if possible . ;)

AMSOIL, good for 9K.

The PF-25's are getting hard to find so I was running a PF-1218 for a while until I found a NAPA brand replacement for the 1218 that is long and black...nearly looks like the old cannister itself. I don't have the NAPA part number handy right now. A little hard to see in this pic but you get the idea:

The NAPA part number is either a 1060 or 1061, one has the check valve, one doesn't. I can't remember which is which.

I don't think it matters since the filter is mounted vertically.

I use them on both of my Corvettes and my big block Chevelle.

I would use a Baldwin B1441 if you had to take off the stock pressure relief valve when you converted to a spin on filter. The other filters listed do not have any pressure relief (B1441 relief set at 15psi).

K&N is what I've used for years. Wix, Baldwin, and NAPA Gold also good choices.

This isn't the 56 Vette, it is my 70 Chevelle which is still a Chevrolet engine. You can see how far down the (2qt) WIX 51794 filter goes here (I was replacing the clutch).
