How does a fail safe thermostat work?

Are they always partially open? If so, does it take a little longer to get the engine to normal temp?

I put a fail safe in when I replaced the radiator and it seems to take twice as long to come up to temp. Just curious if that's how that work, seems if it never fully closes it would take longer to come up to temp.

short answer - it fails open, rather than fail closed. So if it does fail to operate as designed (open at 180 deg., for example) it's natural inclination is to fully open.

It fails open and must be replaced with a new tstat after it fails (according to motorad). It does not reset - ever.
