Which heads to buy - 64cc or 70cc?
 

I have a 1973 L48 Coupe that I am restoring. I bought the Edlebrock air gap intake, an Edlebrock Thunder Road 650 CFM carb.

I am puting together a cam and head package, and picked the Edlebrock Performer Plus cam kit (Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 288/288, Lift .442/.442).

I am looking at the Edlebrock Performer RPM heads (Cylinder Head, Performer RPM, Aluminum, Assembled, 170cc Intake Runner), but I don't know which to get.

Should I get the 64 CC chambers or the 70 CC chambers?

Which would be best for the stock L48 bottom end?

Assuming you have stock type dished L/48 pistons you want the 64cc
version. 60909 performer strait plug head uses edl-5767, 1.46 dia. springs .575 lift but in my catalog, summit or jegs I have not been able to find the spring pressure listed.

64cc will give you more compression ratio. I went with 58cc off a zz4 engine, they put my CR at about 10.5. runs great.

The previous owner said the engine was rebuilt, but I doubt that is right. I will have to pull off the old heads, before I buy the new ones, jsut to be sure, though.

I am looking at some cheaper ones on eBay currently. I would save about $500.00 over the Summit price of the Edlebrock ones.

They seem to be the same. The guy is using quality parts, and the spring rates are similar. I would still need to prot match them to the intake and gaskets.

Are they edelbrock heads ? lots of chinese stuff on ebay. you want the 64cc chambers even if you find out you have flat top pistons. If you have original type dish pistons 58cc chamber would be even better.

You could find a better cam then the edelbrock to use.

vortec heads are nice and cheap.

The ones on ebay are Procomp heads, and are from China, like all the rest of the stuff I am puting in the car during my rebuild:willy:.

I don't want to go to vortec heads, becasue everything I have now is for the early Chevy design, and I don't want to change all that stuff.

I asked Skip White about the heads in the "Patriot Heads" thread.

I will not be buying anything until I hear back from him. He did respond and said the intakes are 2.02 nad the exhausts are 1.60 on the Procomp heads in the above thread.

I am really looking to see if anyone has used the Procomp heads and did they like what they got, now.

I have decided to go with the 64cc combustion chambers. I put 93 octane in the car anyway.

I have a set of Procomp aluminum Vortec heads for my 405 and I think the quality is fine. The heads were shipped to a friend's machine shop bare where he built them using quality parts and performed port work on the exhaust throat and gasket matched the exhaust openings.

I thought Procomp was Australian.

Anyway, the quality seems fine...just as good as any other after market head for that price. Obviously with more money you get a better product.

I am running th 64cc Edelbrock RPM heads with flat-top pistons. Go with the 64c heads.

64cc is a great choice however since you have stock dished pistons, I would look for 58cc heads :thumbs:
