Barn Find - Whats it Worth?
 

I am a C3 guy however, I have been looking for a project and found this 1960 in a barn. Problem is that I don't know what to offer the owner for it. The original motor is long gone, but everything else appears to be there (or in one of many boxes). It is a four speed car with what I believe is 31200 original miles in the odometer. Body looks good with the exception of some poor front end work that was done. It looks as if the entire nose was replaced at one point. There appears to be no rust on the frame. Probably about 95% of the trim, bumbers, grill, emblems, lenes, seats, etc are all in boxes. The owner has had it since 1970. It has been in this barn for ten years. I am not sure how long before that it was parked. I have tried to make a couple of pictures available on the link below. Can any C1 guys give me some guidance?

Agree with previous post. Plus, it all depends on what you want to get out of the car. If you are buying it to restore and sell for a profit, you won't make it unless you hold the car for a long time. And even then it is doubtful.

If you are buying the car for something to work on, enjoy and drive for a long time, then it looks like a good candidate. Just be ready to get out your check book. I'm up into nice new Camaro V8 land, and my frame is STILL not under the body....

Not a dime over $15K and that's only if you have always wanted this particular car. For $30K you can get a nice driver. It will take a lot more than $15K to get this car to that point and that's only if you do all the work yourself.

I have added some more pics to the link above. He was talking 10K, and he wasn't even real firm on that.

10K is a decent deal. You can always go the resto-rod route.

If he was not real firm on the $10K then offer him $7500.00 and go from there. Let us know what happens.

missing the trim behind the seats, that isnt reproduced, polished old stuff is around $500 for the pair.

missing bumpers, looks front and rear, $1000 minimum

looks like the lower front windshield trim piece was missing - reproduced (not my advice) $400, find original and get it polished

trim pieces for windows missing - reproduced $100

door windows? - $300 to $700 and they need the trim around them

dash insert holder for passenger side missing, not reproduced - $250 to ? if you can find it?

Seats - original $800 and they need covering add extra for that

Front fender spears missing - $250+ for reproduction, originals ?

Side cove trim missing - reproduced not very good (been there) $500+ for originals

replating the windshield posts - $500

This is not a car to restore in my opinion, resto rod, maybe, but you are missing a lot of original type of trim pieces. Yes you can get reproductions and maybe you get lucky. The cove piece I had, the hockey stick one (top with the bend in it) was not bent right and would not fit no matter what. I ended up sending it back and getting my originals polished and the dents out.

Offer him $7500 and walk him around the car pointing out what pieces are missing....those missing pieces are hard to find and expensive.....

if the front end wasnt done right or it was just patched, unless you can do the body work, and you wont know until the paint is off, it could be a pricey proposition.....how do I know? Been there and paid for it!

One of my friends just bought a '62 in the same condition from a guy who owned it since 1971. He bought it for $3,000.00. So, I would offer a low amount. You can always go up. :thumbs:

Like I said, at least 95% of all the trim, the bumpers, the seats, door glass, radio, emblems, the grill etc are in boxes. So most of it is there.

If it was cleaned up and taken to Carlisle as a barn find, it would bring $20k, IMO. Even in today's market. They all look bad when found.

Buy it or let me buy it.

Just make sure it has a vin tag......

That thing is a money pit. Unless you can do all of the work yourself, except for maybe spraying the paint on it, go look for something together that runs
If you can get it real cheap, and cannot do your own work, sell it and use the money towards a running car. Paint and body work alone could tripple the purchase price.

Be sure about no rust. To me if he advertised it on ebay he could get 20k, especially if it was still dirty.

Every project looks like this. In fact, most drivers that turn into bodyoff restorations end up looking like this to me too. Frankly, 10k would be a steal even if you had to end up parting the thing out--don't think you would have to do that. Somebody would give you more than that if you put back on the market. I would show up with 7k greenbacks in my hand and, just in case, 3k more in my pockets.

Most importantly to me would be the vin number stamped on the frame, a pillar vin tag that matches, and clear title. Just know your rights and liabilities on Bill of Sale-no title. This would be a no brainer to me.
