Tuxedo Black 68-69..How Many ?
 

There is always talk how many code 900 Tuxedo Black 68-69's were produced as no records were kept.I ask alot of NCRS guys and they always guesstimate that less than 900 were produced each model year.I sold a black/black BB coupe recently and also currently own a black/black SB coupe and every show i attend and see a black 68-69 i check the trim tag and 90% were originally green.Just wondering what you guys think...Jerry

The Corvette Black Book lists 708 Tuxedo black cars for '68. 1969 numbers are not listed but you could reasonably expect the same or slightly more black cars for '69 since production ran longer. Rick Bizzoco's book has a beautiful black '69 convertible on the cover and featured inside.

708 black 68s, no numbers for 69, but I would think about the same. If you figure there were about 27% more Corvettes built in 69, compared to 68, (28,500 vs 38,600) then I would guess that the number of black 69s was between 700 & 1,000. This is just a guess, but it's probably in the ball park.

What's the difference between tuxedo and ordinary black?
Saw tuxedo black car for sale but it looked like paint was worn off.

I did not know the Black Book listed production #'s for black in 68.Bizzoccos 69 book is a great read and tons of details on 69 model year changes...:thumbs:

I agree with you, Jerry. Almost every '68 or '69 Corvette I see is usually a repaint from another color. I look at trim tags a lot as well.

tuxedo black was just a color name by GM and DuPont( original paint supplier) its just a shade of black. if you go to a large car show and see three cars with what they call the original shade of the the original color. you will see three different shades of the same color. :cheers:

Agreed... I searched from California to CT for a real triple black code 900 and the vast majority were coded Fathom Green #983.

It was worth it, though.

Not impossible, but it is tough to find a convertible triple Black,1969 400. AC. 4 speed. Leather, Side Pipes, PW, PB, PS, T&T, Shoulder Harness, Speed Minder, Side Louver, AM-FM with Headrests. But whose counting? :D

Warren,i do it at every show including Carlisle.When my black/black 69 427/400 was on the for sale field at carlisle everyone looking at it ,before it sold,wanted to look at the trim tag to see if it was a 900 code...BTW Warren hope all is well...Jerry

If anyone is interested I have a friend that owns a '68 black/black 435 h.p. convertible. It's certainly a project without the original engine but the trim tag tells the story.

I'll wager it is impossible to find another convertible Tuxedo black/bright blue interior,1969 435 hp automatic, PW, PB, PS, Side Louver, AM-FM with Headrests, rear window defrost. But who's counting?

Everyone was looking at it at Carlisle to see the trim tag AND the fact the car was drop-dead gorgeous.

If I could have stolen that thing off the for sale field I would have in a heartbeat.

Here is another originally triple black 69 convertible accounted for and saved from it's life as a wreck stored for 20 + years in a garage in Michigan :)

What difference does it make ? Black is black, it usually is an improvement over the color that it originally was and with me, if it ain't black when I get it -it will be. :toetap:
