Help decode chev small block engine number (non vette)

12L586156V05220MD

It's not a corvette engine, it's been installed in a ute I'm looking at buying but I'm hopeless at ID'ing these things.

The seller tells me its a 350 chev - but I'm not 100% convinced. Could be a 307??

It has aftermarket valve covers so the easy way to tell is gone.

Anyone good at chevy numbers ?

The car is 2 hours drive away - I'm working with numbers I got from the owner.

V05220MD

are the key characters to decode the engine, in particular the last three. The V means it was built in Flint Michigan, 0522 is May 22nd. The yanks do their dates backwards, not like us normal people. ;)

Are you sure it's OMD? If it's DMD then it could be a 267 or a 350. Get the casting numbers and the casting date.

12L586156 is the VIN derivative of the car. L is the Van Nuys plant, so possibly this was a Camaro engine

Thanks for the info.

I've asked the guy if the number is correct and he says it is. I've double checked what he gave me against the vicroads website (local government registration authority) and it is the same as registered with the govt.

Heres the new numbers he got back to me with:

VO522CMD
GM29
3970010
E32
I did a net check and found out the following (helps when the numbers are correct)

3970010 (327 & 350) block was used in cars, trucks and vettes.
CMD (= 350) app = tur 350, taxi

Turns out its the same block thats in my 1970 350/350.
