looking to replace shocks on my 2001 c5 what to get?

My car has about 109,xxx mile on it and the factory shocks I am sure are done. Im looking for a good economical replacement that are possibly better than the stock ones.

C6 Z-06 shocks
buy them from Gene Culley at www.gmpartshouse.com

OMG! C6 ZO6 shocks! :smash: Massive improvement over stock and there only $240 new for all four.

There have been 4 recent post on this very topic. There a direct bolt in replacement up grade.

Purchase some used C5 ZO6 or Z-51 Sway bars and springs for even more enjoyment! Gene even has a C6 Sway Bar and spring upgrade.

Are the shocks on the c5's a pretty easy swap?

Bill Curlee 05-09-2010 12:41 AM

About as straight forward as it gets. No special tools if thats what you mean. The most complicated part is compressing the shock. I use coat hanger to keep it compressed and when I'm ready, just CUT the wire and it expands in place.

How is the C6z shock on a lowered C5 over 30k miles?

Cut bushings in the front, all the way in the back (few threads showing)

You need coilovers if you're going to stay down there. You're sitting on the bumpstop inside the shock, so you basically have zero shocks. Anything you put on there won't be felt.

How do these compare to Bilstein Sports?

Cybermind 05-11-2010 06:25 AM

Personally, I would go for the Bilstein HD's.

For a lowered car I'm planning the Sports.

Not spending $1500+ for coilovers.

Not a knock on Bilsteins, a good shock, but not made for a lowered car. You should look at this before you do. If you're dropped 1.5" or more, you might as well install a couple pieces of pipe for shocks.

Personally, I would pick Bilstein Sports over anything else (except for LG coilovers which use Bilsteins, anyway - but they are much more expensive than a set of shocks).

If your C5 is at stock height or lowered on factory bolts, then Bilsteins are the way to go. That's what I'll be getting after I put some more miles on Maggie.
