ls2 427 vs ls3 427

If looking to move up to a 427 which base would you guys recommend? I have not yet purchased the car so I would like to make my purchase with the future in mind. Please tell why you prefer whichever you prefer.

the LS3 427 is less money but is not recommended for a power add situation

lsx block

or get a stock ls7 short block they handle good amount of power

So an ls2 427 is a safer bet if you want the possibility of a power adder?

99blancoss 06-12-2010 04:47 PM

Yes, or you have the option of the LS7 but for a power adder I'd prefer the re-sleeved LS2. Of course there is the LSX block as well if you don't care about the weight and the RHS and Warhawk too. The idea being to keep the stroke 4" or less for the LSx engine. Sleeve length is the issue for the longer strokes and a power adder application. And thats not to say it cant be done, just something not recommended by HKE

Our Superdeck 1 is a great option for you. We can take your LS series block whether it be an LS6, LS2, LS3 or even LS7 and we can sleeve it with our ERL Superdeck 1 system. You don't have to go buy an LSX block that weighs 125 lbs heavier or another cast aluminum aftermarket block that will cost a lot and you still have to machine it after you get it. We take the GM OEM LS series aluminum blocks and do all the work needed for you to add a power adder or if you are wanting to go with big cubic inched.
Our sleeves are longer and are at a 5.800 length and all of our Superdeck 1 blocks come standard with doweled billet main caps for even more added strength. Our Superdeck 1 starts at 2600.00 with you supplying the core block and that 2600.00 includes all the machining and honing needed for you to be ready to assemble your block. You can check us out at http://www.erlperformance.com
Please let me know if we can help in any way. Thanks!

Please educate me as to why you'd want a 5.800 length sleeve. I'm being serious.

Just reviewed your website. What would the 9.7:1 427 run if I supply the factory ls2?

99blancoss 06-12-2010 08:51 PM

We offer the ERL blocks as well, that was the direction I was going in with the LS2 vs the LS3, or for less money the re-sleeved LS2 from RED has excellent results as well.
We can do a Super Deck I or II, I think we have a SD II in stock ready to use as well. We're doing a couple LS2 427's right now for a few people on here.

I vote w/ an ERL setup. The Superdecking process seems pretty reasonable for the results.

The issue with LS2 AND LS3 427's and power adders is the longer stroke. Too much boost/nitrous can push the piston down in the cylinder far enough to lose seating on the bottom ring. A 416/418 is about as big as is recommended for power adders...and "16" or "18" depending on how much is being added, with a touch extra cylinder wall material in the 416...or ten thousandths or so less cylinder liner in the 18.

The biggest benefit to our longer sleeve length is piston stability. One of the major problems in running a stock length sleeve is that with a stroke larger than stock you run the risk of the piston rocking in the cylinder on the down stroke. This is because the sleeve isn't long enough and to much of the piston comes out of the bottom of the cylinder and leaves it un-protected. That will also cause the rings to not seal properly and you'll get excessive blow-by as well.

You can choose between our Superdeck1 sleeving or our Dry Sleeve sleeving. Our dry sleeve package is very, very reasonable in price. Let me know how we can help.

can you tell me what the stock sleeve length is? can you provide the core? what is the difference between superdeck 1 and superdeck 2?

ERL PERFORMANCE 06-18-2010 05:08 PM

The sleeve length on a stock LS2 sleeve is around 5.500. Our ERL Superdeck I sleeves have a 5.800 sleeve length.
We do have cores available in stock.
One of the biggest differences between the Superdeck I and Superdeck II is the deck height. We increase the deck height on our Superdeck II up to 10.2 and the deck height on our Superdeck I stays at a factory deck height.
