"widest" 285/40/17s???

Tire widths seem to vary between manufacturer. I've noticed that Sumitomo brand tires tend to run narrower (have heard the same thing about Nitto).

So what brand tends to be generally "wider"? (looking for 285/40/17 specifically)

Thx!

I never heard that.. makes no sense really.
should be 285 millimeter wide
40 means the height is 40% of the with
and 17 is the wheel size

Yep, what you say is all true.
But in reality, the "actual" width does indeed vary.

Here is a post with pictures showing the difference in a 315/35-17 tire.

Yup. Doesn't seem right but seems to be the case.

After doing some more digging it seems Goodyears tend to run on the wide side.

Anyone have any experience with Kumho in this regard? Tend toward wider? Narrower?

I bought two different motorcycle tires, Metzler 260/40 18 and Avon 250/40 18. The 250 is wider than the 260.

Manufacturers tend to have close, but different measuring points. I measured the tread surface.

Here is what I found from TireRack.com

285-40-17
Continental "ExtremeContact" 11.4"
Kumho Ecsta XS 11.0"
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-DS 11.3"
Pirelli PZero System 11.5"
Bridgestone Expedia S-01 11.7"
Goodyear Eagle GS-C EMT 11.4"
Kumho Ecsta SPT 11.5"
Kumho Ecsta ASX 11.5"
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+ 11.4"

Bridgestone is the widest at 11.7" and Kumho is the smallest at 11.0"

Hope someone can answer this quick! I can get a pretty good deal on some 235/40zr17-94w to go on my '89. Can I put these on the stock rim and/or any modifications needed (spacers, etc.)??

jon1all 10-21-2010 01:40 AM

235 is going to be a pretty narrow tire regardless... might want to rethink that size, good deal or not.

Another Tire Thread

I wondered the same thing too as I have had the same size tires as another guy and they lhis always looked wider than mine. Hmm

Does anyone know which tire is wider between the MT and the nitto drag radials?315 35 17

It seems these dimensions still don't mean anything. The link in one of the posts above about the 335's shows almost 1.5" difference in width, yet the 'specs' per Tirerack don't show this massive difference.

In my experience the MT drag radials run pretty big and the Nittos run small. I have a set of 275 MT drag radials and they are significantly wider than a set of Firestone 285s have.

So my guess is the MTs will be wider (not to mention they hook wayyyyyy better)

Goodyear and BFG

You always get wide with BFG and Goodyear.
this is a 285 Goodyear F1-GSD3 and a Michelin 285.

Great comparison pic... thanks for posting that! Just wish those Goodyears weren't so dang pricey!!! Love that tread!!!

Doesn't exactly seem a fair comparison, as the Goodyear is not mounted. Put it on a 9.5" rim, and it will pull in.

Is this the new metric for measuring tires? How wide they look? I can't believe someone asked which drag radial looked wider. Wouldn't you care more about which hooked better? :willy:

It's fair...
The goodyear might pull in some but not much.
I looked at these pretty closely when I was comparing and thought about the one being on the rim and not the other.
I measured and the tread patch alone is more than an inch wider on the Goodyear.
