Ever been locked INSIDE your Vette?

This is crazy but I picked my '08 from the dealer after having TSB work done on the two seals in the tranny. When I walked up to the car the driver's window was down:toetap: and the FOB was on the console.
"No FOB" was indicated and it wouldn't start until I exited the car and re-entered. I drove to dinner and when I came back to it the lights came on bright but it wouldn't do anything "EXCEPT" lock me inside the car. The door button, door lock, windows and OnStar would not work? OnStar said this was a first!
I was locked in there for almost ten minutes, then the alarm activated and it started???
Headed back to the dealer in the morning, any idea what happened?
Thanks!

UM,You do know about the emergency release door lever on the floor by your left leg and right leg on the passenger side, right?

AORoads 12-02-2010 09:08 PM

It has been said that funny things can happen when the battery itself gets low on juice. Sounds like someone left something on for awhile and the battery is run down. Have them check the battery. Has the car ever not started before?

RicK T 12-02-2010 09:10 PM

You know about the emergency door release levers next to the seats....yes?

Likely just a run down battery. Charge it......or replace it if appropriate. :)

I was on my phone trying to diagnose the problem and absolutely forgot about the manual release! I have a two month old battery with a full charge, my lights were the normal brightness, unlike me!.lol
Just went back to it and there is a very faint buzzing sound when I push the Start,Acc,Stop switch and the brake pedal is very stiff? :bigears

:iagree: :D

EVRose 12-02-2010 09:30 PM

I've haven't had to take mine to a dealer for service yet but this is a perfect example of why I dread ever having to. They fix one thing (hopefully) and screw up something totally unrelated to the problem it was there for in the first place.

I agree with you. I went from no scuff marks to three major marks on my entry panel that won't come out, plus one nasty grease spot on my new Lloyds Mats?
Update: Reset the FOB and no problem now, thanks guys!
Gary

God help the poor bastard that forgets about the emergency door pull in an actual emergency.

MARSC6 12-02-2010 10:36 PM

A few years back I was trapped. The negative terminal on the battery came loose and the drivers side sill protector was a bit out of place blocking the emergency release lever. I had to crawl across the console and exit through the passenger door which is very difficult in these cars.

Ever been locked INSIDE your Vette?
No and I don't expect to be unless I'm no longer breathing.

su8pack1 12-02-2010 11:08 PM

No, but the wife did right after we got it.

K9KUZ 12-02-2010 11:18 PM

I have had several situations like this. Both while I was in the car and while trying to get in. Probably happens once every month. Not a battery problem, just some gremlins. More annoying is when I have a armfull of groceries and the trunk will not open. This happens about 3x per year.

TBD 12-02-2010 11:23 PM

Unbelievable. Everyone with a brain knows you kick out the window(s) when that happens.

Peace, out.

spearce 12-03-2010 12:03 AM

I got locked in a Corvette at my local dealership. While I was looking I got into the show room Corvette and closed the door. I went to get out and the door wouldn't open. The salesmen had no idea about the lever. He had to get the sales manager who knew about the lever. The manager said " If You're stuck, you bought it".

lastcowboy 12-03-2010 07:33 AM

left someone setting in the car and took off......came back later she
was still setting there screaming she could'nt get out,,she did'nt know about the release and i forgot about it auto locking....:D:D:D

davanz 12-03-2010 09:37 AM

If it was a real emergency situation, and the emergency levers were not functional, (they should be as they are mechanical, not electrical), there is the removalble roof panel to consider, if so equipped.

:iagree: Another car hits the right front and destroys the battery. Car is on fire. And the driver is thinking about phoning for help but totally forgets for 10 minutes that there are emergency releases on the floor.

Low battery seems to be the most likely cause of all your problems except the memory issue.

BTW, how do you "Reset the FOB"? Sounds like the dealer didn't have a clue either.

C7Joy 12-03-2010 09:51 AM

Only happened once, in the dealer's showroom, because the battery was dead. Sales explained about the emergency door release at that point. I bought the car with a new battery installed, no more trouble.

gunterwalker 12-03-2010 10:36 AM

As usual with these cars check the battery first. If it comes back good check it again. Most issues with weird stuff like this are fixed with a new battery.

I love how people buy a 60+k car and dont even read the manual but you buy a cell phone or somthing for 100 bucks and you read it.....

If you picked the car up, and the FOB was sitting on the consul, I bet the battery was going dead in the car... the FOB will drain the car battery if left inside the car.

This is backed up by? Doesn't seem like that would happen, one would assume the car would power down like normal until some sort of activity like a door was opened or button pressed before looking for the FOB again after the sleep mode started.

6spdC6 12-03-2010 01:41 PM

I HAD a 05 for 2 years with the real DBS problems (happened about 10 times) It would be OK to get in the car but then it went click click and nothing, no power to open the door. I got in the habit of opening the car and starting engine before I would close the door. If I have not driven the 07 Z06 car in a few days I still do that just in case. :D

The car battery might still be the problem. Might be defective, possibly a bad cell. More likely, the Service Dept did who-knows-what to drain the battery.

Or maybe another problem is killing your car battery.

Or maybe your fob battery is weak/dying. They're only good for ~3 years depending on usage.

Even with a bad fob battery, the glovebox slot should work... try that the next time you get "NO FOB DETECTED".

Cybernetic Medic 12-03-2010 01:54 PM

HAL is alive and well. Sorry Dave, I can't allow you to do that.

WRONG!!! The car only talks to the FOB when you push a button either on the FOB or on the car. There is no ongoing conversation between the 2.

:iagree::iagree: A very common misunderstanding of the way the system works.

JoesC5 12-03-2010 06:38 PM

My C6 doesn't like me. It's happy when I open the door and leave. No way it's going to try and stop me.

No it won't. The car doesn't send a request to the fob until something tells it to - like pressing on the door pad or start button. The fob doesn't send anything to the car unless it gets a request from the car or you press a button on the fob.

Joe_Planet 12-04-2010 01:05 PM

I did the same thing in my garage out back of my house. I forgot about the release cable at the back of the vette so I called my wife and daughter to let me out with the extra set of keys. They laughed so hard and told everyone about it and they have made it a town joke about this. What is so funny I did it the second time my battery went down, but I found the release cable this time. Funny feeling, syswayne

No, but a friend of mine whose 05 coupe was the 25th Vette he's owned did that.

He called his son-in-law on his cell phone to come and get him out.

He kept the car about 5 years and only put 1600 miles on it, then sold it to his daughter.

Joe Camel 12-07-2010 06:08 AM

Is that emergency release lever going to work if the window won't drop down?

So you could have crawled into the back to get to that release cable? You do know about the levers?

Yes, you can get the door open without the windows indexing. Closing is more of a problem.

dgrant3830 12-07-2010 09:00 AM

This just happened to my girlfriend. I got out to talk to other Corvette owners at a meet. She got locked in and yes, she had her FOB with her. She said she tried the door open buttons, tried using the FOB itself...all nothing. She forgot about the emergency handle and she did not try the ignition. I put a new battery into the FOB when we got home later that evening but have not been able to duplicate it even before replacing the battery.

You should try that sometime.

Kicking out a closed window is extremly hard unless you have something metal and hard to hit it with.

Seriously though, my wife thought she was locked in the car a couple of times when I walked away with the fob, but now she knows to push the unlock button on the door. No more "trapped" in the car.
