Dr. Color Chip review

I know this subject has been discussed before, but I just ordered a kit for our vette, and will let everyone know what I think of it, after it arrives and I use it. Our car has the 41U black paint code.

Please post before & after pics if possible. I would like to try it on my black DD that has front end nose rash due to the highway miles I have tacked on. I plan to use it as a 3rd family car now that my daughter is about to start driving and I'd like to clean it up a little without painting it.

Subscribing...thinking about ordering a kit for mine as well.

not at all happy with it when tried it on girlfriend's white Lexus. One of the steps requires you to "wipe off" the paint and all it did was smear it onto area that didn't need paint, resulting in a very sloppy look. I wiped all of it off and got it fixed by auto body shop.

Additionally, the color wasnt the best of matching, either. I don't recall what Lexus called it, but it was a kind of white that Cadillac uses on it's Esclades: white with gold hue.

I must footnote that the area I was attempting to repair was a long, 3 inch or so 1/8th of inch wide scratch, so you may have better luck with small chips.

Good luck

After you apply the Dr. Colorchip paint to the scratch/chip, you are supposed to smear the paint with your gloved fingertip. However, after that, you are supposed to use the thinner type liquid on a cloth and rub the surrounding area down- this should take care of any paint that isn't in the chip.

I've used it in the past with decent results. As long as your expectations are where they should be- that it will minimize, not eliminate blemishes- you will like it. I used it on Black and it came out good. If you knew where the chip was to begin with and looked for it after I was done, you'd be able to find it. However if you never knew it was there, you probably wouldn't see it. Hopefully that makes sense

Good/Bad

Well it's winter in Maine and I have a kit sitting waiting for spring. Have read great reports in the past and am looking forward to trying. Your results please.

Just tried this on my purple pearl 98 vette and it worked great on the smaller nicks - they seem to disappear. Larger chips are more challenging though as the paint doesn't fill them in as well, but is still a nice improvement. You'll need some extra latex gloves and some small paint brushes as you only get a few with the kit.

Had a one foot scratch on my DD car door that a body shop quoted several hundred dollars to repaint the whole door. Ordered a Dr Colorchip kit for it and it's virtually invisible now. worked very well as the scratch was thin and shallow.

Waiting to hear your results

I tried it on a few small chips and I didn't think it worked too well.

I also was suspicious as to how well it would work but ordered the kit anyway to cover front end road rash on my black 03. First few attempts with the glove did not seem to work to well as with wiping, it seemed to take the paint out of the chip. The cleaner worked well to clean the area up and the brush helped to fill the small chip holes. The issue was wiping the area smoothly. I located an old window tinting rubber squeegee and on the same spot, placed the paint in the hole and then with a smooth moderately firm action, went across the spot in a direction that kept the squeegee relatively flat. Following up with the cleaner cloth wrapped on the same squeegee tightly, I went over the spot just firm enough to clean the paint from the surrounding area. After cleaning and letting it dry good (a few hours) I reapplied the same process and virtually the spot did disappear.
My only wish was that for the money, they would give you more supporting supplies-cleaner and cloth. FWIW, I tried using WalMart touch up paint and basically got the same results which were good. Sorry no pictures-

I'll be watching this as well, as I've got some road rash on both rockers.
