T5 from as 90/91 Camaro z/28 V8

I'm going to convert my 76 L-82 auto with a th400 to a manual 5 speed. I have some questions about this transmission. I think this is what I should be looking for to get a 5 speed in my 76 L-82 sb350.

Few questions:

1. Will the bellhousing that came with this tranny from the 90 or 91 Camaro Z/28 350 v8 work on my car?
2. Will the clutch, etc that came with this setup work too?
3. Does anyone know what kind of transmission mount I need to make this work. I think these chevy t5's are off 18 degrees?
4. Will I need to move the shifter?
5. I have a th400 today, I think I will need to shorten the driveshaft. What about the yoke?
6. From what I can find I believe this is a World class T5. Anyone know for sure?
7. Anything else I need to be aware of? Do I want the speedo cable from the camaro too?
8. Who has dropped a t5 from a Camaro in their c3? Any advice?

Thanks

Any thoughts on this?

Found another t5 out of a 2001 camaro z/28 that comes with the bell, clutch, etc. Wondering if these parts will work for me. I don't want to buy a Bell, clutch, etc I cannot use.

Thanks for any advice.

Do a search in the C-2 section lots of info there on the combo. Same suspension

T5 out of an 01 would be from a V6, wrong spline count, wrong ttrans/bell housing pattern.
01 Z28 would be an LS1 T56.

The camaro trans will work fine behind a basically stock engine. If you put a much power into them from a warmed over motor, T5's won't last long.

As I understand it they only put t56 transmissions in V8 cars. So I think either the T56 or a T5 out of a V8 would work.

Is the question of whether the clutch will work due to the spline count?

Garys 68 07-19-2011 08:10 AM

The V6 trans are weaker. They have a 14 spline count, you'll want a 26 spline. The trans/bellhousing is actually a Ford pattern that mates to a V6 BOP bolt pattern bell housing.
You'll want a 83?-91 camaro/firebird T5 that was mated to a 305. BTW, they never put a T5 behind a 350.
As for bell housing clutch linksge, depends on if you want hydraulic or z bar link.

I agree, sticking with one out of a V8.

I *think* GM didnt start putting WC T5's in Camaro's until 1986. So I think I want at least a 86.

I would go this route in my '81 if i could find a mount for the transmission. I'm surprised no one manufactures a mount that will just bolt up.

Ya so with the GM you need a trans mount. With the Ford T5 you need a adapter to the bell housing. Not sure which one is harder.

I do know that if you use a Late 80's to 91 Ford T5 you can buy the adapter from wilcap.com. So maybe that's a better move???

Garys 68 07-19-2011 10:45 AM

With the ford trans you'll need the adapter, an adapter pilot bearing, and a hybrid (10 spline) clutch.
Making a 15 degree trans mount would be easier/cheaper.

Ahh. ok, So going GM WC T5 is easier than going Ford.

Garys 68 07-19-2011 12:42 PM

There is another possibility with the Ford trans.
You can swap a 2.95 GM input shaft into a Ford T5 with 2.95 1st gear.
The Ford trans/bell housing pattern wont fit a GM bellhousing, but an 86-89 Astro van housing (4.3/T5) has dual GM/Ford bolt holes. The trans/engine bolt pattern is standard chevy. And you can use any 26 spline GM clutch.

Been playing around with this conversion for some time now. Try these forum threads for a lot of info on the topic. However, there are areas that you will have to figure out stuff for yourself.

The GM WC T5s were in '88 and later Camaros, but went to a Ford type mounting pattern in '93, IIRC. The Ford T5 input in the '94-95 Mustangs are a bit longer than the earlier years. The Ford T5's are supposed to be able to handle a bit more torque than the GMs, but none of them are strong enough for regular high-hp gear banging.

I bought a rebuilt '94-5 Cobra (supposedly) unit for the conversion in my '73, along with the hydraulic bell housing, master and slave from a mid-'80's Chevy pickup. When it came time to actually have the adapter(s) made, I ran in to the problem of determining the exact spacer measurement to get the input shaft to insert into the pilot bushing to the original depth. The distance I measured (relative to a GM T5 along side for reference) did not agree with the info I get from the forum articles and the tranny rebuilder. I'm to the point now that I intend to go back to the rebuilder to see if I can swap for another GM T5.

If you pm me your email address I will send some pics of the Ford and GM T5s side by side. The Ford unit is rotated 7* and the GM 17* relative to the horizontal mounting face of the trans mount. The bell housing I am using will require the modification of the trans mount as the trans will be straight up. In the pics I took you can also see that the location of the shifter mounting box is substantially farther back on the GM tailhousing. A custom modified shifter will be required in any case, as far as I know. I think using the Camaro bell housing to cant the trans over 17* may cause a problem getting the shifter to land in the correct position-----I don't really know about that, but would really like to hear about any experiences of others that have done it, or tried.
