Is there an equivalent for the GM synthetic power steering fluid?
Can't find any of the Goodwrench #12345866 (16 oz) power steering fluid around here at dealers, they're out and only order in by the case.
Their Goodwrench parts book identifies it as a "partially synthetic" fluid. Anyone know of a name brand fluid that is equivalent and where to find it? I checked Autozone, Pep Boyz, Advance Auto Parts... nothing that said it was equivalent to GM Part #12345866 or 12345867 (only diff 66 vs. 67 is 16 oz bottle vs 32oz bottle). Almost bought Valvoline SynPower fluid but chickened out because it doesn't state an equivalency to the GM part#. |

I have used Amzoil synthetic tranny fluid (hydraulic) in power steering for years.
No problem Jack |
Re: Is there an equivalent for the GM synthetic power steering fluid? (Lone Ranger)
that sucks..as I just bought 2 quarts of the GM power steering fluid last Sat. from the dlr. About $4.50 per quart. New part GM # is 1050017. If you can't find a replacement, I can pick some up for you and ship it.

The owner manual for my '95 states to use only 12345866, 12345867 or equivalent which are identified as "synthetic" in the owner's manual but "partially synthetic" in the Goodwrench parts catalog... |

I recently changed over to Valvoline SynPower fluid after flushing the system. So far, it has worked out well. In fact, it feels even smoother.

Redline makes some good products. My 86 was overheating (boiling) the power steering fluid during autocross and track events after I installed the Z51 rack & pinion. I flushed the system and went with the RedLine p/s fluid. I no longer have the problems with overheating. |

I have had good luck withthe Valvoline synthetic, too.

I've used Valvoline brake and power steering synthetics without problems. They seem pretty good.

Tom and Dan, is the Valvoline Power Steering Fluid you are using the SynPower branded one, and does it mix okay with the GM stuff? I just need to top off the reservoir.

Re: Is there an equivalent for the GM synthetic power steering fluid? (Lone Ranger)
Yup. Valvoline synthetic P/S fluid meets/ exceeds GM requirements and it works great! I would flush or siphon all the old fluid out of the reservoir before pouring in the new stuff, though.

Re: PS fluid
Dealer in south Jersey "thinks" he is seeing a problem with leaks and Valvoline PS fluid. I had Valvoline in the Corvette and was changing to Redline, have the bottles. Then heard the RedLine does not meet the same specs for Corvette. Don't think this is even controversial, RedLine know the product is not for all GM cars or all Corvettes.
As to ATF, I fear it does not have the properties required for modern PS systems. This worked well years ago and in some systems, but not all PS systems will work "as well, or as long" with ATF. So bought a case of GM "Cold Climate" PS fluid and flushed out the Corvette, and will flush out the hydro-boost in the Suburban this weekend. I bough the case from Jeff Koop and split it with another person that needed fluid. Jeff will sell in any quantity it seems for the same rate, but check with him. I will make the offer again, if anybody wan't the Redline PS fluid I'll leave it on my porch in New Jersey, I'm in Western Union County! |

I ended up buying a 16oz bottle of the Goodwrench fluid # 12345866 from a local dealer's parts shop. Since I'm only topping off about 1/2" of fluid on the dip stick, thought should stick with the factory recommended stuff...
