Escort Radar Detector- users
 

I was wondering........ I bought an Escort 8500X50 radar detector a few weeks ago. When I mounted it to my windshield, the two smaller suction cups didn't seem to be big enough to hold all the weight of the detector. It also came with a larger holder with a suction cup that was about 2 1/2" in diameter. When I hooked the detector up to that one, it really secured it pretty well. But the smaller one just didn't seem to work very well for me. If you use the suction cups to mount yours with, which mount do you use? I think I am going to have to stick with the larger one.

Your lucky,when I purchased mine there was no larger one just those 2 small ones which are junk.Blame it on profits before performance.

If still no luck with suction cups, search for a post on a mounting bracket made from a stainless ruler that mounts up high at the sunvisor bracket.

I did this along with a phone cord (for power) that is tucked in the windshield header and passenger a-pillar down to the passenger footwell fusebox. Has worked well for many years for me.

Stick with the larger one or do a more secure permanent mount like a Blend Mount or one that is secured by way of the visor screw.

I have always used a visor clip, and mount it on the passenger side sun visor. (cordless SOLO S3). My second choice would be a bean bag mount.

I use the larger one mounted right under the mirror. The length is perfect for that position. I also have the blendmount bracket that mounts to the back of the mirror but my mirror attachment to the windshield is so fragile (it's come off 3 times now, once just adjusting it) that I haven't used it.

The Blendmount is the way to go !

I use 2 small suction cups but have had to replace the original ones with some I bought at Ace hardware. One or the other has released a time or two in direct sunlight but generally they work just fine.

I place mine so it is just below the left side of the mirror and it is wired to the back of the mirror. I'm concerned that if it were mounted too high, particularly on the visor, the rear facing detector would be blocked by the roof of the car.

Don't be cheap, buy a Blendmount, and call it a day.

For me, it wasn't a question of money. I just can't imagine having my detector sitting right out there in the open. To me, that is an invitation to get a ticket. The reason I made my own mount is because that was the only way that I have seen to get the detector up and out of sight. If I were a LEO and I pulled up behind a car with a device sitting there in plain sight that was specifically designed to defeat my efforts to check the car's speed with my radar, I would be looking for a reason to pull them over. Even if the officer is passing in the other direction on a two lane road, the detector would be easily seen. This is all aside from the question of theft of the detector also.:thumbs:

If they really want to stop us, they will, detector or not. I will agree we are more apt to get a ticket, instead of a warning, if the detector is spotted. Several of my friends are cops, they actually find our use of them amusing. One of my buddies was giving me a fun ribbing the other day, saying that while I may defeat his radar, he'd park up out of sight, and slap me around with his Lidar :D

I told him that he could slap me around with his Lidar, but then he'd have to catch me, and his Charger wasn't up to the task :rofl:

I have the same exact detector with the two small suction cups. What I do is attach the suction cups to the detector, moisten the suction cups, keep the detector laying on the dash and slide and press it against the windshield. Works great for normal driving.

The Escort mounts that they supply are junk. I have purchased a superior suction-cup mount from an eBay member (Mount Guys) and then attached the 8500 to the new mount.

The Blendmount looks slick, but I haven't used it (yet).

So, where do you get this Blendmount?
