Import a Boat??????

Anybody ever import a boat?
Not a canoe.......but a 18ft or so boat and trailer.

Any issues arise?
I assume HST (Ontario) at the boarder, like a car.........but what else?

I'm still looking for a Jon boat........might go to TN and find one.

Comments?

When we were at the American Border bringing in our Vette it appeared as if was the same as a car. Vin #, No liens, bill of sale, etc..
There was a load of used wave runners being brought in to Canada and they were going through the same process.

I don't think there are any special issues with the boat as mentioned above, but the trailer is a licensed vehicle and has to be treated as such. There is a section on the government web site about this. The most difficult thing is providing proof that all recalls have been done.

Hi Mike !

I looked into it a few years ago, but eventually found one down in Niagara Region. Anyway here are Links to RIV and Pat's Boating that have some info for you:

Cheers,

I've never brought 1 in on a trailer, but have bought larger one's and sailed them back to Ontario, just called customs when I got back and they came down to inspect and check out the paperwork etc...once thay stamped their approval on my paperwork, some of which they supplied, I just went and paid the taxes .... seemed easier than doing a car....

Thanks for links my friend!

I'll add this to my lengthy "to-do" list.

Trailer isn't really an issue for me, I can take one I already own.

I don't think I'd be caught out in "ole Stinky" with a 18ft Jon boat!...

I brought a yamaha jetski in last year with a trailer. The boat is easier than the trailer. Just paid HST but had docs for the jetski showing it was made in US and had no recalls. The trailer is a hassle - have to follow RIV process just like a car. In retrospect, I should have bought trailer in Ontario and brought it down to pick up jet ski.
