Tomorrow testdrive C6 2005 manual... things to look out for?
Hello corvette owners :) :flag:
Tomorrow I'm going to look at a corvette c6 from 2005 with 30.000 miles on the clock :) The car is MANUAL shifted. Are there common things to watch out for when I do the testdrive? I also read some things about the gearbox that it's a weak thing with the 2005 models.. I hope someone can post some things to check when I do my testdrive tommorow! This is the car: http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9784/70719473.jpg Thanks! |
ask about the roof on the 2005
Hey,
My 2005 coupe is great and I have 61,000 miles. Biggest deal was the roof panal seperation. Mine flew off because the glue was bad. GM made it rite and I was pleased. I go to the GLEN and race mine for 2 days each spring and I don't have a problem withe 6 speed. I hope you find a great car ! Barry |
If you're a serious drag racer doing high RPM drops off-the-line you'd probably want to beef-up the drive line/differential but I don't consider the 2005 transmission weak per se. I run road courses in my modified 2005. I put-down 490 RWHP. I rarely do high RPM launches off-the-line but otherwise I'm often running WOT and making high RPM up-shifts and downshifts. Despite hard track use my 2005 OEM transmission has held-up fine.

The only thing to look out for is You're Gonna Love It.  :flag:

From the 2005 owner's manual.
One to Four Shift Light (Manual Transmission) When this light comes on, you can only shift from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) instead of FIRST (1) to SECOND (2). You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn off this feature. This helps you get the best possible fuel economy. After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a lower gear if you prefer. Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes on may damage the transmission. Shift only from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on. This light will come on when: • The engine coolant temperature is higher than 169°F (76°C), • you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and • you are 21 percent throttle or less. |
Some are minor, obviously, but some like parasitic drain, erratic fuel gauge and loose harmonic balancer could be very very bad.

Check to see if there was a problem with the steering lock. I needed to replace mine because of a defect in the column.

There will be people who say to stay away from a first model year vehicle (the 2005's were the first year of the 6th generation) like this one, and yeah, there were a few problems during this year but I know a bunch of 2005 C6 owners who have gone problem free and couldn't be happier.
Great colour too. Good luck with the test drive. |
Thnx man :)
I'm from the Netherlands, unfortunately here are not much corvette's..hehe Btw.. I'm still in a really (little) doubt about buying the C5 Z06!.. Also 405HP, and a really sporty look.. But it's just missing the luxoury and options that the c6 has.. :D How about the riding on the road? which one is better for daily use? |

Hello corvette owners :) :flag:
Tomorrow I'm going to look at a corvette c6 from 2005 with 30.000 miles on the clock :) The car is MANUAL shifted. Are there common things to watch out for when I do the testdrive? I also read some things about the gearbox that it's a weak thing with the 2005 models.. I hope someone can post some things to check when I do my testdrive tommorow! This is the car: http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9784/70719473.jpg Thanks! The car you are interested in has different color headlamps compared to the body color. IMHO never a good sign :ack: Fred |
It's less about the year, and more about the previous owner and whether s/he took good care of the car.
I'd rather buy a well maintained 2005, than a 2008 that's been beat on. All being said, I got my 05 from a guy who took REALLY good care of it, and I couldn't have been happier with the purchase! |

Yep, another problem free 2005 owner:thumbs: MY car has 34K miles on it. I have had to replace the fuel vent solenoid and it took me less than 30 mins to do it myself. The DIY thread is here http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...49-w-pics.html BTW you can easily bypass the skip shift (Computer Aided Gear Selection or CAGS) with a smart fuse. Check out this thread....I did this and it is great:thumbs: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...2013-cags.html Check the tires. At 30k miles they are either worn out or have been replaced. To replace tires your looking at $1,500 +/-. Even if the tires are newer, turn the wheels to the left or right lock and look for excessive ware on the inside of the tread. The tires are so wide you cannot tell with out turning the wheel. |
you get buy a CAGS shift bypass for about 18 dollars and get rid of that 1-4 shifting. I bought one for my 05 (fuse type) it installs in about 5 minutes. Then you wil REALLY enjoy your ride
