Power Steering Fluid- 2 GM Part Numbers
 

The Owner Manual for our 2009 says to use GM #89021184. Today the local dealer only had #89021185, one number higher. The design of the label and bottle shape are different, but the quantity is identical (16 oz) and the front side on each simply says Power Steering Fluid. I didn't get to look at the rear label to see if there are different specs.

So, how do I find out if there any difference in the actual fluid?

Anybody?

The local parts guy says the part numbers seem to be interchangable, but that doesn't mean the fluids are truely identical.

I can't find the 2013 Corvette Owner Manual online, but the 2012 version still shows 89021184 for the PS fluid.

One is a quart and one is a pint. That is really the only difference.

I have one bottle of each sitting in front of me as I write this, and both are marked as 16 fluid ounces, which is one pint.
The bottles are slightly different shape, but identical capacity.

Hmm.. perhaps I got the numbers mixed up then. There is an instance where one is a quart and one is a pint. I'll look further into it.

You don't have to use GM bottled power steering fluid I hope you know. They purchase from another source, bottle it and charge a lot more for it.

There are doubtless many other brands that will work just as well as the GM stuff, and a few that will be worse. The cost difference is not significant for a few pints, so I just go with the GM.

I did a Yahoo search on 89021185 and found somebody's order for 89021184 on GM Parts Direct. The web site said it added 89021185 to the person's shopping cart because 89021185 replaced 89021184. GM periodically rolls part numbers for some reason or another. Could be all they did was switch suppliers.

Since I flushed my system with the 1184 stuff and have ~1/3 bottle left over, I'll use that for any top-offs required until I do the next flush in about three years. AFAIK, there shouldn't be any problem with the opened-and-recapped PS fluid absorbing moisture from the air, like brake fluid will do in a hurry.

BTW, my steering "flush" is simply the Service Manual procedure, no exotic flushing fluids or machines.
