Ysi + 2.75" pulley = lifting heads???

Took Y2Kroadster's car out today to tune it with the 2.75" pulley. First pull we build 20+ lbs of boost, 30 seconds later it's a smoke show (coolant).

Symptoms:
-White smoke
-Coolant in engine bay
-Oil dipstick pushed out (chocolate milk on dip stick)
-Coolant temps shot to 220*

What do you guys think? The car has ARP's and LS9 gaskets. Only thing I can think of is we should have got the heads checked at a machine shop before bolting them back on?

Order ARP L19 Head studs and you will probly need new gaskets. Problem fixed.

You don't need L19's. HAve the heads checked, get new gaskets, torque them back down properly. Are there any signs of detonation? Are the knock sensors working properly?

4DRUSH 04-18-2013 08:57 AM

Coolant & crankcase are separate systems, sounds like bigger problems than just head gaskets.

Oil and coolant jackets in heads cracked????????

Make sure the haed and block are flat and have a excellent finish.

L19's are yesterday's news because they are subject to nitrogen embrittlement and don't handle even the slightest of corrosive environments. The new trick if you want the top studs is CA625 material. Even recommended for marine environments.

^^^:withstupid:^^^

When head gaskets go, you often push combustion into the cooling system and it spits out from the cap and may leak from the heads.
When you get into the oil, you're looking at a compromise between the crankcase and the cooling. 2 things come to mind. broken piston and or cracked sleeve that runs deep enough into the bore to get under the oil ring and into the crankcase. Broken piston would have to rock it and split the sleeve before the coolant would come into play.
I just lost my motor due to the bore collapsing into the water jacket and it did the same thing you're describing. something GM remedied on their latest LSX blocks by reinforcing the water jackets. They were kind enough to warranty it.

Sleeves will crack along the water jackets where they have way less support. If you digested something in the motor, it will rock the piston and split there too. Either way, I agree with Jay and I'm sorry to say that I'm afraid some serious spending is about to be in order.

If you think you lifted them from a little detonation you may be good with some gaskets and milling the heads. I've seen cars push water and then never lift again with some timing pulled out. If it was some other issue existing I agree that it's going to be expensive.

:iagree:

Same symptoms... ignored them for one last race. Result...

Car is running 13* of timing and the air fuels were about .72 lambda....no knock on the log.

The only thing that concerns me is that the car kinda sounds like a Subaru to me now which usually means broken ring land. I was kinda hoping it was a result of the head gasket being compromised.

This is definitely some ****** news.

Turbo-Geist 04-18-2013 12:29 PM

Any other info on the combination?

Compression ratio, fuel, meth or no meth?

Previous boost level and power numbers?

Have you pulled any spark plugs yet?

Y2KRoadster 04-18-2013 12:54 PM

Greetings all and thank you for all the info so far. We were able to drive the car back to the house...trip was about 4-5 miles.

Would the car even be drivable if something was trashed in the motor? Yeah...I might be reaching here lol.

:iagree: Sounds like one or more bad holes in the block to me..:ack:

Which plugs?

Stock settings with knock sensors? No desensitizing? Did you listen the engine with knock headphones? Quick transients while driving?

BR7EF

Stock knock sensor settings, no desensitizing. No we didn't listen with knock headphones this was the first pull after the engine got to operating temp, we didn't even hit 5500 rpm and we eased into it.

Compression ratio is unknown, the motor was built by ETMC but by the previous owner. Alky Control meth kit, M15 and M10 nozzle....IATs were good, like 42* F.

Previous boost level was the same set up with a larger pulley (3.2). If you read the other thread we were trying to figure why the boost was so "low" but we actually figured out our 3" pulley was actually 3.2.

corvette8189 04-18-2013 01:54 PM

2.7 pulley ysi with l19 studs held my stock heads on my stock block. They for sale too. They do work. But like others said u got bigger problems.

user_name 04-18-2013 02:42 PM

If that motor was like 11:1 or so you could have encountered some detonation. Ask 5 Liter Eater. I hear he has first hand experience. :)

Milan 04-18-2013 02:52 PM

Unless the heads were milled to some crazy amount that we didn't notice, the compression is lower than a stock LS1.

Some more backstory: We just put this car back together after it destroyed a lifter last "season". We replaced the lifters, cam, and hit all the typical stuff while we were in there (water pump, head gaskets, etc. etc.)

To be honest we were never quite sure of the condition of the engine, I guess now we know. We did notice a very slight amount of coolant in the oil the other day when we were changing it (after bolting the heads back on from the lifter fiasco). Not sure if that independent of this or not.

bradenW 04-18-2013 03:03 PM

Pull the heads and everything inside will tell you the story. Sucks! It made a whole lot of cylinder pressure real fast at low rpms and it found it's way out. Just hope you didn't torch the block or heads beyond repair.

Milan 04-18-2013 03:11 PM

Yes I think we will be pulling the plugs, draining the oil and see whats going on with that, then pulling the heads....Fuuu

I'm calling it the curse of a/c man. I was just telling Brent (Y2K) yesterday that A/C man didn't start breaking **** until he went to the Ysi and that I hope we didn't go down the same path as him lol
