Edelbrock intake quality
 

After doing some some research, I've read/heard some not-so-good things about Edelbrock's TPI base. Would anybody like to share some experiences? I want to run AS&M runners but it appears the Edelbrock base is the only one still available new nowadays. TPIS, Accel, SLP, etc. are no longer made. Should I avoid Edelbrock and just port the stock base (although I worry about balancing the flow rates from port to port in a home porting exercise)? Thanks.

Only thing I'm not happy about with my Edelbrok intake is that they drilled some of the mounting holes wrong location so they then had to oblong the holes to correct. I bought mine brand new from Summit.

I have no experience with that base but siamesed the ports on my prior '88 base with stock runners and gained good top end boost.

Just finished porting mine and looking at another that Dyno Don is installing. Core shift is terrible, about 1/4" on the new one Don just got. Put your gasket on there and you'll see. You have to clean it up before you install it.
There is also a thread on ThirdGen.org talking about a problem with the intake at this time last year. Edelbrock confirmed it knew about the bad batch but didn't recall them. Nice guys.

nothing wrong with the Edelbrock bases that Ive worked on and done a bunch of them. Prefer the Accel a little better but if you have an Edelbrock go for it. Better than the stock one I can assure you of that. Dont worry about core shift, if any thats what grinders are for.

Ill have some flow results on both ported to the casting limits and bone stock castings in about a month for you guys. :cheers:



Corvette 40 you can really dig into those castings. On the head side the last few inches is a bad pinch point go to town so if looking in there at a 45 deg angle you want to straighten out the line of sight.

After reading some threads over at 3rdgen, it seems like there was a bad batch that got out and Edlebrock basically did nothing. That sucks. Its alot of money to be laying out for a new part that may or may not be made correctly. Its a bummer that Edelbrock appears to be the ony game left in town when it comes to getting a new manifold base.

With a little work the Edelbrock will flow more than you need. Notice the weld build up bellow the fuel rail pedestals, I opened the roof all the way into those welds, and yeh, I got that 45 and a little more. It was a good experience but I wouldn't want to do all that work again. My SLP runners weighed 5 pounds each when I started porting and weighed 2.5 pounds each when I finished.
I would still prefer an Edelbrock that needs a little clean up to a ported stock base.

I gasket matched my Edelbrock 3860 at least 1.5-2 hrs. The SLP runners had me thinking what was the point if I have to do all this work ? Gasket matched my stock heads minor work and opened the exhaust a tiny bit.

Did you return it?

If you bought it from Summit Racing and it was the wrong or a defective part, they would have return your money. Summit is one of the great vendors out there with awesome customer service.

I had no problem with my Edelbrock 3860 , it was clean with no core shift at all.. If Im not mistaken the Edelbrock was the exact same intake as the TPIS intake.. I just reamed it out a little bit with a dremmel tool, port matched it to the Accel runners and then to the ported plenum. I can't believe Edelbrock didn't do anything about the bad batch of intakes, they have always been a stand up company from what I've seen....WW
