Clutch wont disengage?
 

Something is messed up with my clutch. I can move the gears when engine is off to any gear and nuetral. But with engine on and in gear the car moves with clutch pedal all the way down. Tried adjusting rod to all kinds of positions but nothing works. The clutch is permamently stuck in the engaged mode.

So calling tow truck this morning. Actually got new Mcleod clutch on the way from Summit. Just hope its not tranny related and only clutch. Still cant think of why it would be stuck in engaged position. Any ideas? I guess if fingers arent depressed then it always is in that mode.

Ready to take tranny out for around 9th time. Getting pretty good at this.:rolleyes:

If I let my car sit long enough, my disc will stick to the flywheel.

Making sure nothing is front of me; I just start it up, in gear, then slam on the brakes when the engine fires up.

Breaks it free every time.

yep hopefully it's just stuck there from sitting a while. Mine has done that twice over the last 6 years during the interior exterior strip and restore. Both times mine has broke free from just driving it around.

You may just need to adjust the linkage so that you have the proper amount of 'free-play' in the pedal before it engages. Or, a component in the linkage may have broken or worn out. Get under it and check it out.

:iagree: Had a car do that to me when it sat too long. on my car you could hold the clutch pedal in and it would come loose. you should change the disc anyway.

Yeah I should have mentioned that the thing was slipping bad the past few weeks at upper RPMs like 3000. So I was assuming I overheated or glazed the disk but now this problem means there maybe something else to it. We should see this weekend if the new clutch shows up tomorrow.

I was going to mention the clutch fork and clip not fully inside the bearing slot. Sometimes the fork clip gets slid over one of the bearing flanges instead of inside the slot. All the clip does is maintain the fork between the two lips of its slot where it belongs. I have verified that the clip can end up over the lip instead of inside the slot.:eek:

No I ended up using these guys in Long Beach, Stu's transmission who I trusted before. Now I dont think they know what they're doing since they dont get many Muncies anymore.

Thinking of getting new one from Auto Gear in NY. Sounds like a good upgrade and simple bolt in for around $2200.

You might be right about the TO slipping off the fork. Should find out this weekend but taking my sweet a..time.

Well i've met Dave several times and 4 speeds have been his specialty for like 30 years. He can do all the upgrades like alloy gears and steel mid plates for half what AutoGear wants. And he's local too.:thumbs: I'm not a sales man but this guy really knows 4 speeds - muncie or BW.

Update:

Found the HAYS pressure plate had a fracture in the base ring of the fingers and some little thick wire ring also was fractured. So at least it wasnt my tranny afterall.

New McLeod clutch is in. Should have her running by tonight.

Tell us how you like the McLeod. Pedal effort, etc.

Had that happen before and it ended up being the ball that goes between the Z bar and the block had backed out and gave enough movement as to not let the clutch disengage. I had to grind up a wrench to fit in there to tighten the ball back to the block.

Hmmm....that's interesting because I noticed the opposite side of my Z bar where it goes into the slot bracket thing and is tied with a nut was very loose on mine. Maybe it was so loose it caused all this drama to begin with.

I'll have to make sure nothing is wrong with the Zbar connections. THX

Got her back on the road and WOW I cant believe how awesome this McLeod clutch is. I've been using HAYS for 10 years and for some reason always had geometry problems. I had to drill a lower hole in my Z bar bracket just to get more pedal travel.

Now the new clutch is perfect with plenty of pedal travel to spare. Pedal pressure is very light, maybe too light but still awesome with ceramic disk. Car seems faster than it's ever been.

I think the HAYS may have not had standard dimensions or something since I had tried all kinds of stuff. Adjustable, long, short pivot balls. Different TO bearing lengths and could never get it perfect. Very Happy:rock:
