Key in car
 

I just bought a 2007 C6 and put my jacket in the car with the key in the pocket. After closing the back hatch I was unable to open the car. Are you effing kidding me! Did they really engineer this that poorly? Is there another way to get in, other than going home and getting my other key?

So its the cars fault you locked your keys in it?

That's not right. Perhaps the battery in the FOB is on its last legs.
When you get it open replace the battery.
My car senses the FOB from quite a distance.
The only way it would lock on you is if the car were running at the time you closed the doors.

You can lock your key in the trunk or if you put it in the back and shut the hatch, same as you can with any car.

If you leave your key in the car and leave by exiting using the doors, it will tell you (if you have it set up to do so).

I would suggest reading the owners manual, as well as searching for threads on this subject.

The car is not set up to sense the key in the trunk/ hatch area, although, occasionally, it will let you open it via the button above the rear plate. I wouldn't count on this option, though. Early on, I locked my purse in the trunk of my '05 vert), but fortunately, the top was down, and I popped the trunk release. I have tried duplicating this in my '09 Z06 and my vert, but was only able to get the vert open once when my fob was very close to the latch mechanism, and have never been able to duplicate this on my Z.

Many people hide a key on the exterior of the car. I assume they did it with a magnetic key case.

It would be a pain to lock your key in the trunk but I don't know of any car that wouldn't do this, although, it might be hard to do with a vette. As long as the FOB battery is working the car should sense that the key is near and allow you to unlock the doors or the trunk. I have never tried this but I think it would work this way. Maybe I'll test this, after I get my second key, just to see if I can lock the keys in. Sorry about the trouble but it's not the cars fault. If you haven't done it yet, you should read about how to get in the car if the car battery is dead. A few weeks ago I came back to my car and the battery had died. Thankfully, the dealer had gone over the procedure and I was able to get the hood up for a jump.

Wear pants with pockets. Keep the fob in a pocket.

I have done this in my 05 and a friend did it in his 07. The button just next to the plate has worked for some people. Neither of us were so lucky. I had someone bring my second fob, but my friend had to call a locksmith who had a very difficult time getting into his car. I think it took them multiple hours to get it open.

My mistake was having the fob in my gym bag, then tossing the bag in the rear hatch (to keep it "safe") before I got out into go to the store.

I had my dealer so some work, then parked it in front of the dealership so I could get it after work (after closing hours). They put the key in the pass. door pocket. It wouldnt let me open the driver door, but the pass door worked fine. Jumped in the car and went home. Im guessing it only senses which side the key is on.

The hatch area is a well-known "dead zone". The C6 usually won't detect it there.

Tip: Get a spare key. Under $10 at most key shops. Tell 'em to use key blank B106 -- same as a Saturn key. Fits nicely in a wallet.

To keep dirt out of the lock, I covered mine with painter's tape.

While your hatch is open, might as well check the pull-tabs that manually open the driver's door and fuel door.

They are located in the hatch area, on the far left.

Shut off the auto locking feature. Can't lock the car without the FOB.

Some guys have had luck shaking the car and pressing the hatch release.
Yes the trunk is a dead zone so no warning with the 3 beeps.
If the doors are already locked and you open the hatch to throw something in, it doesn't matter if you have auto lock disabled.
This has happened to a lot of us. I grabbed the wrong keys and threw in my computer bag and tossed in the trunk once, then couldn't get in, I put my hand in pocket to get the fob out and realised I put the wrong set in my bag....

To the Op, once you get the car unlocked here are the instructions for the passive locking and the warning if you leave the FOB in the car. This is from the 2007 owners manual.

Passive Door Locking: This option allows you to
select whether the doors automatically lock
during normal vehicle exit. When the ignition is
turned off and all doors become closed, the vehicle
will determine how many keyless access
transmitters remain in the vehicle interior. If at
least one keyless access transmitter has
been removed from the interior of the vehicle, the
doors will lock after eight seconds.
Press the OPTION button until PASSIVE DOOR
LOCKING appears on the display, then press
the RESET button to scroll through the following
modes:
• OFF (default)
• SILENT
• HORN
If you choose OFF, this option will turn off.
If you choose SILENT, the doors will automatically
lock eight seconds after you turn the ignition off,
remove a keyless access transmitter from the
interior of the vehicle, and close both doors.
If you choose HORN, the doors will automatically
lock and the horn will chirp eight seconds after
you turn the ignition off, remove a keyless access
transmitter from the interior of the vehicle, and
close both doors.

FOB Reminder: This option chirps the horn
three times when the driver’s door is closed and
there is a keyless access transmitter inside
the interior of the vehicle. This will only occur when
the vehicle is off.
Press the OPTION button until FOB REMINDER
appears on the display, then press the RESET
button to scroll through the following modes:
• YES
• NO (default)
If you choose YES, the horn will chirp three times
when a keyless access transmitter is inside of
the vehicle while the ignition is turned off and the
driver’s door is closed.
If you choose NO, this option will turn off.

Wow! It sure is nice to be a member of this forum again, but it's even better to own a Corvette again. Thanks for all the feedback.

My last (and only other Corvette) was a 98 C5 convertible which I ordered from the factory brand spanking new as a fullfillment of a childhood dream. After 3 years I sold it and started racing go karts (safer). Now, after a divorce and the kiddies grown up, I'm back with an 07 C6, manual, Z51, and I love it! Are there any Corvette clubs in the Napa CA area I might reach out to? One of my neighbors, also a new owner, is also looking.

P.S. I'm not brain dead, my fob has a good battery, the car was not "locked" although I will check the auto lock feature and will turn it off, I don't run around in spandex but do wear pants with pockets, and my trunk button and both side doors woudln't open. :)

Even though I knew it would do it, I still let it happen. Now I am more careful after having to call my wife to bring another fob to the airport.

:rofl::lol::iagree: Great advice. With push button start, I find no reason to remove my key from my pants pocket.

Call me old fashioned, but I think these FOB's suck. Yeah, they are somewhat convenient when they work right. But I would prefer a standard key ignition any day. Oh well, excuse me while I go buy some more CR2032 batteries, just to be sure I have spare FOB batteries EVERYWHERE!

I'm also gonna get me one of those 'B106' keys, as an added precaution. Good tip there, thanks CO Lightfoot!
