rusty rotors/hubs...ugh
 

I take pride in keeping my ride very clean even tho I drive it a lot.... the one thing that I cant clean is the dreaded rusty hubs...my car is basically new and this bugs me....I know they make some shields/covers, or I can sandblast and paint the originals or buy some precoated new rotors..... Id like some real world experience from the members that have gone down one or more of these roads to a cure... and if you have a fav brand/vendor that has the best deal let me know....

Or you can just spray them yourself (I didn't spray the center since you won't see it anyways). I did this 4 years ago and they still look exactly the same. If you do spray them, use the 400+ Degree Spray Paint. I bought the can at Home Depot.

Black permanent marker. 99 cents, 20 minutes. Doesn't make them shiny buts keeps them from rusting.

Caliper paint will work for around town (500 degrees) on your rotor hats. It wont work for track use. For that you need grill paint (1200 degrees). Caliper paint will melt off. Ask me how I know.

mine came new from the dealer in this crap rusted condition. bugged the ford right out of me too. get some high temp black grill paint and brush it on....easy clean look in no time.:thumbs:

M'eh. Oxidation happens. I can't see it so I don't care. High temp paint will clean that right up.

As long as you don't track your car...I painted mine the same color as the car and cleared them with the same paint and clear that GM uses. They are on their second year and still look terrific. Many positive comments on them.

Very easy to paint yourself. I color matched mine and did barrels on the rims at the same time

Did pretty much the same thing 6 months ago and they all look great. Aggressively clean the rotors, mask off the areas where the pads make contact with the rotors, apply a heat resistant primer, color coat and clear coat and you should be good to go. Be sure to do the edges of the rotors too.

When I upgraded to Z06 brakes I had the rotors zinc plated, locally, before installation.

Inexpensive and very durable.

I had thought of painting them myself but figured that without sand blasting or some heavy prep work that it would be short lived. ... sounds like plenty of people have had good results. ...

I agree....But I have determined I can buy new rotors that are already coated for about the same as powder coating my old rotors; which already have 15k miles on them....

My BIL owns local Goodyear tire store so i just took it to them and they cleaned then well and used high temp engine paint in flat black.

I brush painted mine with Rustoleum silver paint, I also did the rotor vanes.

I went down to the local sherwin williams. You don't have to go to the automotive store, the regular house and contractor store carries good spray paint. I got a can of controls rust safety red and it still looks great. Gotta take a rag and wash the dust and dirt off is all.

Yes…get the rotors zinc plated BUT that is only one part of the issue…the hubs need to be treated also. Here is a thread on the matter and go to post #19

I'm assuming all of you painted your rotors before they were rusted? Not much can be done once the rust starts right?
