496 Stroker

I have a 496 stroker [actually a 489]

Built by my professional engine builder, famous for Big Block Chevys

454 2 bolt .030 over = 489

[commonly referred to as a 496 .060ver most 496's are actually 489's]

GM Open Chamber Iron 'smog' heads -- runs on super unleaded.
Eagle 'forged' rotator with H beam rods
Flat tappet cam.
Every moving part was new.
Ran it in my street car. [1969 GTO] Stock 400 back in now.
2500 street miles.

Sitting on the floor in heated storage Oil pan to intake. balancer to flex plate. Could not build this for anywhere near $4500 I'm asking.

Won't ship.

located in Western Mass.

Pittsfield halfway between Albany NY and Springfield Ma. Near Lebanon Valley Speedway. Musclepalooza..

Bump...Slam it in and go! Looks stock great for your big blocker! Make an offer.

454 + .030 over = 468

454 + .060 over with an aftermarket 4.250 stroker crank makes a 496

He's probably assuming it's a given that it has the bigger crank by referring to it as a "stroker" and talking about the (aftermarket) "Eagle 'forged' rotator". GLWS

I was going to say that my 454 bored .060 over is a 496 so I was a little confused by the first post but understand it now.

Nice engine, good luck with sale. Here is a bump for you.

Thanks guys, I clarified original post adding it a 4.250 stroker crank.

I used the 'good' Eagle forged stuff. No cast steel here, all forged.

Hate to see it sit under the bench...I most likely will never use it.But if I scatter the L-88 in my Chevelle....I'd surely miss it...

Sounds like a sweet engine but im curious in a build like this why smogger heads?

karkrafter 02-12-2017 03:35 PM

When I built this engine, it was for everday street driving, I wanted it to have flawless street manners. Run cool, pump gas, nice idle, power brakes, A/C. But still blow the tires off on command

To do all that gotta run a mild cam with low compression...torque comes with stroke [and cubic inches]

The open chamber head has always been the better performing GM BBC head, the smog heads had small ports, better for drivability, and the open chambers of the smog head was better of combustion. Whth a non-pop up piston, compression is in the 9's.

A head change could easily add 100 HP to this engine, a head and cam change could easily add 150 HP. Heads Cam and Pistons make it a race engine. But at a price of street drivability.

And for me, my 12:5 to 1 L-88 has all the race manners I need.

Thanks for the clue in, this would be sweet in my 69...but timing wrong for me.
