C6 - Blacked Out Tail Lights
 

Good morning All,

New C6 owner here and for those out there that have blackout kits on your tail-lights, is there one kit you would recommend over another? I have searched the web and there are so many vendors I thought I would ask to see what experiences everyone has had with quality, durability, etc.

Or, would I be better off just having them tinted out like I plan to do with the side markers?

For a DIY project, tinting most guys use laminex film or night shades spray tint.

For me, I would have a body shop paint them with a black and clear mix to tint them. I did that with my side markers. Cost was $100.00 and they came out perfect. :thumbs:

Have them tinted is a better option. But the best option is Eagle eye LED tails that are tinted . Much brighter. There are lots of threads on them. Do a search.

The shop gave me several shade samples that I could put on and ponder to find the
Balance between cool and still seeing my brake lights
The tint I used was not nearly as dark as I thought it would be just looking
At samples putting them on the car and testing with the lights was a big help

I had my buddy use my paint code and mixed it with clear and had them sprayed. They turned out really good, he charged me $75.

Not really - What looks great on my white car will look totally different on a black car.
The reflection of the body color onto our taillights is pretty significant.
That's the reason I mentioned the samples and being able to look at it before choosing the darkness

That said mine are 30% vinyl that was made specifically for tail lights and head lights.

I would have to agree, my tail lights were not very tinted at all but on the car they look fully painted black. Im sure if I were to put them on a white car they wouldnt be that dark.

I went with Lamin-X film in Gun Smoke, IMHO it is proabably the best and well priced option, but your car so whatever you decide. There is one darker film also as well as lighter versions :thumbs:

IMO, you all did it correctly. I think they all look great. I had a can of Rustoleum spray tint in my cart for a good 30 to 45 minutes today, and set it out right before entering check out line. I think I would rather go with tint, but at the same time, want to go to LED bulbs, so I can't decide on just ordering tinted LED installed lenses, or doing it all myself, eventually. Blah!

I'm a complete clutz when it comes to spray painting and applying vinyl so I decided on tinted acrylic covers that just stick onto the lense. I think they look good but a little too dark. I ended up ordering Eagle Eye led tails that are lightly tinted so some of the red shows through. Installing them today so I'll post pics when I'm done. Here's what they look like with the covers. Tinted tailights look great and are very subjective. You may end up trying several different methods before settling on what looks good on your Corvette! Good luck!

The lights look great on a black car, but I think that the color would be a cop magnet in my area

buy some film on ebay, 10-20 dollars, watch a youtube video, and do it yourself.

I did it myself, took a couple trys but I got it perfect, keep in mind these are not super thin films like in tints, they will have some thickness, 2mm or a bit more maybe, just so you buy the right product.

or you can go the spray can method, which is VHT nightshade, 5-10 dollar spray bottle, This option is riskier, and its not removable, unless you want to sand and put a new clear coat. spray a nice even coat till its as dark as you want.

I've done both methods on multiple cars, These tail lights are perfect for film though.

I used film on my original tail lights, then I got LED Tail lights and used film on those, both came out great.

Did mine with some spray tint from walmart. $6. Comes off with brake cleaner if you don't like it. Also, please ignore the crappy picture quality. Old phone had a horrendous camera.
