[Tuning] Holley Street Avenger
Started the 69 up yesterday and could not keep her running at idle. Would jump from 1k, down to 500 and eventually sputter out. Tried multiple times and it just would not keep running. I'm running a 350/350 with a holley street avenger 670 CFM.

If you haven't already: -Make sure vacuum holes are all plugged that are not being used. -Turn the idle mix screws in on both sides of the primary and back out about 1-1.5 turns to start off with. -You might have to then bring the idle screw up a bit. -Check the float level. Good place to start is mid-way in the window. -Make sure it's seated properly on the manifold. Sorry, but that's about as much as I know about Carb's. I have a 670 Street Avenger on my 34 Ford and went through the same thing. Note also that the Electric Choke stays on alot out of the box. Even after the car sits for only a few minutes and you start back up, the choke kicks on. I had to back the choke off as far as possible. I'll try all of this, if I can find a good diagram of the Holley 670 CFM. Don't like messing with stuff I'm not familiar with and carbs is definitely in that list.

Is the electric choke hooked up? I have the street avenger 670 and it would do exactly what said before the choke was connected and when it was cold. I hooked it up last week and haven't had the problem since, although, as mentioned above, the choke does seem to stay on awhile. Good Luck

Was it running correctly when you put it away for the winter? I agree with the comments about the choke. I have mine adjusted all the way back. I tune my 670 with a vacum gauge only. The first time I did it I turn both screws all the way in then backed off 1 1/2. This will get the car running and probably close to were you need to be on the adjustment. Your looking for the highest number you can get on the gauge. Mine is around 20-22 if I recall. When making the adjustments I turn each screw a 1/2 turn at a time. Works perfectly for me. You should see your fuel half way in the sight window both front and rear. It shouldn't take you more than 2 or 3 minutes to adjust the 670. If that doesn't do the trick I would pull my spark plugs and check them. Might as well check the wires too. Don't forget to look for vacum leaks.

I have the same carb. The electric choke is the round black thing on the right side that should have two wires going to it. Just becuase it is hooked up doesn't mean it is working. A bad choke will usually result in a high idle or it won't idle high before it warms up. It shouldn't bounce around like that.
Could be the vacuum advance on the fritz. That can cause your idle to bounce around... Good luck in your hunt! |

i have a friend who has a street avenger carb, and goes through this same problem...i also hear this alot from other guys with street avengers....are they hard to tune or what? :skep:

How do I troubleshoot the vacuum advance??
The choke is wired, but I have no idea if it's functioning correctly. |
