BBC casting 14015445, tall deck?

A few of these 14015445 blocks are on eBay. It appears that they came out of trucks. Anybody have any solid proof as to if they are a tall deck or not? I'm waiting for one of the sellers to get back to me right now.

Mortec.com only says...

14015445...454.......78-90...2 or 4 bolt

Thanks. :seeya

Thanks, the seller replied confirming it was a 9.800 block.

Another quick way you can tell is that on a std deck block, the upper water
pump bolt hole is right near the deck surface, probably only an 1/8 inch away, and on the tall deck block it's a good 1/2"+ away from the deck.

I am not disputing the casting no. info, but there WERE tall deck Gen IV 454's. Care to buy some pistons? Buyers, beware! Good tip, Danno85.

RACE ON!!!

Scorp:
I agree with Clem, there weren't any tall deck 454 big blocks until the Gen V motor. The only motors that were tall decks were 366s & 427s.

Would anyone have an alternate application for Perfect Circle piston part number, 224-2782? It is a 4.25" bore with a 2.040 compression distance. It is a 4 ring piston and PC lists it for 1970's, 454, medium duty trucks. With a 2.00" (454 = 4.00" stroke) crank throw and a 6.135" rod, that adds up awfully close (10.175") to a 10.20" block height. I personally, have not encountered one of these engines, and the books COULD be in error, but that is my authority. May be not, but it wouldn't hurt to check before you buy.

The pistons you listed were origionally made available for guys wanting to bore the 427TD blocks to 4.250 bore. They are also now used in the aftermarket TD blocks with the 427/454(4" stroke) cranks. The 454 was not made with a tall deck design. As stated above, the visual way to spot a tall deck is the distance from the top water pump bolt hole to the deck surface.

Hey Scorp......you thinking about a BBB? That is a big block bannana!

I forgot this.....14015445= 454, 1975-1987 truck, light duty(as per GM).

Re: BBC casting 14015445, tall deck? (sinistervette)

The pistons you listed were origionally made available for guys wanting to bore the (1) 427TD blocks to 4.250 bore. They are also now used in the aftermarket TD blocks with the (2) 427/454(4" stroke) cranks.
Just a little mis-information, here.

(1) 427's and 454's share a 4.25" bore. GM didn't increase the 427 bore to attain 454 ci.
(2) 427's have a 3.76" stroke. 454's have a 4.00" stroke. GM STROKED the 427 to get the 454.

All MarkIV engines (366, 396, 402, 427, and 454) share a common, 6.135" length rod. All those engines, EXCEPT the 454 had the 3.76" stroke. Consequentally, piston compression distance only changed with block deck height, until the 4.00" stroke 454 was introduced.

I hope this helps clarify things for the BB students, following this. Good luck, all, and...

RACE ON!!!

OOOPS. Talk about a brain fart! I knew they shared bore(427/454) but not sure why I typed that! I've used the 396 crank in a 454 block before to make a 427 clone. Must be too many  .

Re: BBC casting 14015445, tall deck? (sinistervette)

OOOPS.
I think we've all done that. I know *I* have.

Dimensionally, the 366, 396, and 427, cranks are the same, tall or short deck block. Likewise, the 427 and 454 blocks, in either the tall or short deck verson.

Because of the sameness of the 427 and 454 blocks, one way to differentiate between 427 and 454, is to feel the inside of the harmonic damper (balancer). Feel for a constant ID of the outer portion. A constant ID indicates a 427 (internal balance), a "bump" in the ID is an external balance weight. The 454's are externally balanced, like the sbc 400. all other Mark IV's are internally balanced like the sbc 350. Same flywheel/flexplate difference, too.

RACE ON!!!

I have one of these 14014554 in my 68 I came up with the same info Mine is not a tall deck. On the front I have @T1015PLO suffix code I just cannot find any where someone told me there's another list of post1990 suffix codes but you have to buy this book with them, not available online. So I'm still not 100 percent sure it's a 454 but hell to drive this 4 speed dayem it's a fast one w/an 850 Holley duel feed and a strip dominator manifold
