Let's see, one gallon of gasoline weighs 6.2 lbs.
One litre is equal to 0.264172 gallons (US liquid).
So, 1 litre = 1.6378664 lbs.

One website said between 5.6 and 6.3 lbs/gal while another said 6.1 lbs/gal. Guess you can't believe everything you read on the internet. :)

6.2 is an "accepted standard", although gasoline can vary weight .5 pounds up or down depending on the particuclar fuel, the refinement process used, octane, amount of MTBE oxygen levels, etc.
For instance, gasoline sold in the winter is different from gasoline sold in the summer, in cold weather climate regions, like the northern United States.

If you want an exact number, you need to determine the fators for the particular fuel you are using, and apply the following:

The weight percent oxygen in commercial gasoline samples is determined by using partial least-squares (PLS) regression analysis combined with either FT-Raman, FT-IR, or dispersive near-IR spectroscopy. Calibration models were constructed with the use of 33 MTBE oxygenated commercial gasolines. The minimum standard errors of validation with the use of leave-one-out validationare 0.156, 0.188, and 0.119 wt % oxygen for FT- Raman, FT-IR, and near-IR, respectively. An independent test set of 36 MTBE oxygenated commercial gasolines was used to further validate the PLS models. The minimum standard errors of prediction for the test set are 0.155, 0.143, and 0.131 wt % oxygen for FT-Raman, FT-IR, and near- IR, respectively. The wt % oxygen in all samples ranges from 0.2 to 3.262%.

I stick to using the 6.2 lbs average!

I know, I was just making light of the craziness that is needed for an "exact" measurment of some things.
Also explains why you get a varying degree of answers out there.

The topic starter is probably thinking, "I just wanted to weigh my car, not launch the space shuttle"! :smash:

1 littre of water weighs 1.0 kilograms = 2.2 pounds Gas floats on water, therefore Gas would ~0.8kg/l or 1.6#/l

Mike if I told you once .... you have to learn to pee before you weigh yourself, that get rid of 10 kilos right there,

for those of you who are not aware of this fact - Mike was the person that Austin Powers emulated for his famous unfreezing/pee scene in the first movie.

This is some hard info to find!
I went through numerous sites, and I found the the C4 has a 20 gallon tank, the C5 has a 18.5 gallon tank, and that the 63-67 had a option to get a 36 gallon tank!
I did find a reference that stated that in 1978, fuel tank size was increased from 17 gallons to 24 gallons.
So, for some years before 1978, I guess tank size was 17 gallons. Not sure if that necessarily means back to 1969.
But that is the best I could find.
Oh, you wanted liters, so 17 gallons would be 64.352 liters.
Curious, why are you asking for liters? Are you in Europe or something?

Hope that helps, although I didn't really find anything that said for sure that "1969 tank size was 17 gallons", so take the info for what it's worth! :D

My 74 says 18, if I remember correctly. Or about 10 minutes @ WOT

When I fart, I will have less gas in the car, so will my 0-60 times improve?

It wouldn't let me edit my earlier post, that's 18 gallons

No, you just made yourself heavier because methane is lighter than air. Pipe in in your intake an you'll get some boost out of it.

If anyone is tracking for postarity sake, just found another spec, the 1961 had a 16.4 gallon tank. :)

Re: How much does a litre of gas weigh? (1bad69)

so about 120lbs for a full tank?

Re: How much does a litre of gas weigh? (1bad69)

Yep, about 120 lbs. for 76 liters.

Don't know if you caught my question above, but where are you located?
I'm curious because you are asking about liters and pounds.
Someone in the States would usually talk in gallons and pounds, and someone from Europe would talk in liters and kilograms.
Just curious where they use a combination of the 2 systems?
