C3 6 speed tranny swap

Does anyone now how much power a 1997 Trans Am LT1 T-56 six speed transmission can reliably handle? If so who do you know someone that did it and how did it turn out? How much modifying of the C3 is needed? Thanks for the info in advance.

Best Regards,
Darren T. Engle

I have no idea what is involved in the conversion, but I know that those trannys can handle quite a bit. I am friends with a couple guys who both have 9 second 4th gen Camaros that use the T56 transmission and a Mcleod Street Twin clutch. One of them, Taner, recently snapped the output shaft on his while doing what looked to be an amazing launch, but he has now upgraded to the Viper input and output shafts and he should be fine. He was running a 9.60 @ 141 with it before the failure, so that should say something about their strength. Go to http://www.bmrfabrication.com/feature.htm and take a look at their cars. Their names are Taner and Roman. These trannys can take a beating with a good clutch.

Is Taner's transmission stock or has he modified it to handle the power?

Up until he snapped the output shaft a couple weeks ago, the transmission was stock. When he made that run it was still stock w/ the Mcleod clutch.

The T-56 in a F-body is rated at 450lbs of torque. I was planning on going this route, but scared that my Big Block will destroy the tranny. The Viper T-56 is rated at 550-600lbs of torque and all around beefier transmission. That is the route I plan to take.

I think the viper t56 is for the most part the same except for stronger forks and such, i read that somewhere.

Does anyone have any idea on how much the conversion costs for my set up, cuz i just don't have the time to do it selling cars and such.

I have the stock th-350 in place and have a richmond 6 speed sitting in my garage. I have the 6 speed, a clutch, and a 14lb flywheel for my 383. what else do I need and about what does the labor run on something like this?
