High Performance Computer Chip for the Z06???

My sales guy told me he could order a High Performance CHIP for my Z06?

Is that true? I thought you could modify the current chip using LS1 edit only.

Is he blowing smoke up my !@#? or is it for real?

He said the CHIP was about 250.00?

This is the first I heard of a high performance chip being put in a Z06. I asked about putting a chip in and my tech person said do the edit and not change any chip.

I don't know if this guy is blowing smoke or not. I would just :lurk: here and see what the others say!

what you need is Predator and a tune in my humble opinion. mine was $419 including the tune..............HUGE difference

Try the Hypertech upgrade. It is very simple and easy to use and you can raise the rev limiter to 7,100. You will like it!

How high can you safely raise a stock LS6??

I still don't see what the Predator does to increase power. If it adjusts the air/fuel miixture, I would be afraid that one you are moving, the car would run too lean

I used a Hypertech programmer in a Chev pickup I had. Changing all the shift points & firmness made that truck amazingly quicker. :yesnod:

This reminded me of a guy in a car chatroom claiming he put a "chip" in his Z06. When I called him on it he said he bought it from Mid America and when I pressed him for the part number he finally admitted he didnt know it and finally admitted he was blowing smoke. I dont think he even owned a Z06...

the zo6 does not use prom chip replacement for tuning, the power train control module [aka pcm] is changed/re-programmed internally using gm's software or a pc running http://carputing.tripod.com/LS1main.htm

have him walk over with you to the parts department and see if they can find a gm p/n for it... =;-]

it will be nearly impossible to find much more performance in a stock z06 by re-programming the pcm, they are really well tuned straight out of bowling green, ky...

Actually I have seen some guys claim up to 20 hp with just tuning alone, thats a sizeable gain!

Re: High Performance Computer Chip for the Z06??? (WWK888)

and there are people that think their new air intake or tb or corsa exhaust give them that much and more, let's see sae dyno numbers in a controlled test, ie, change only 1 thing at a time and retest...

gm had to do a lot of stuff to the heads on the 2001 z06 to boost the hp from 385 to 405, do you think they have not wrung out every last gain from the stock later z06's at 405 hp?

Re: High Performance Computer Chip for the Z06??? (Sandra Bigwoode)

I am sure GM did what they had to do to get that extra 20 hp and still keep the motor reliable. For those few who choose to try squeeze out even more they may be pushing the parameters for the sake of hp and not reliability.

I also agree I would like to see the dyno slips...I am just relaying what I have seen posted here and not witnessed.

Sandra, you made a comment about new higher flowing air intakes not making a difference in HP.

If that is the case then why do companies like HallTech and others publish dyno results that show the gains?

Re: High Performance Computer Chip for the Z06??? (sliderhss)

There's no chip to change. There is LS1 edit, but there are other software options available too. GM has never wrung every last hp out of any application. Who are you kidding? There are regular 15-20 rwhp gains seen on Z06's with nothing else done but reliable tuning. Tuning requires premium gas all the time, but wouldn't you do that anyway?

An assured 20 hp gain is had with a decent intake w/air bridge. A 50 hp gain is often seen with the above and LT headers and aftermarket exhaust.

Remember, 405 is rated at the flywheel, not the rear wheels. A good intake/exhaust/tuning package can negate the drivetrain losses to show ~400 at the wheels.

Re: High Performance Computer Chip for the Z06??? (sliderhss)

There have been countless dyno proven results posted about good gains using aftermarket intakes. I gained 12 rwhp dyno proven on my Z06 by just changing to the Blackwing. There will always be doubters, whatever....... :leaving:

well, the primary reason they post such glowing hp gains from air cleaners is that they sell more of them to people who really believe they are going to see 27 more rwhp esp with a colder tstat... [any physics or thermodynamics experts here... ?]

sure would be nice to see a car magazine take a stock zo6 and dyno it under controlled conditions with one of each common intake or exhaust mod fitted one at a time and see just how much the real 'gains' are...

testing a ram air intake on a static dyno is a waste of time and fuel, you would need a wind tunnel big enough to take a corvette and flow air past it at 170 mph while on a chassis dyno... that would get real expensive real fast.

Re: High Performance Computer Chip for the Z06??? (sliderhss)

I am comfortable with race engines. The LS6 is still pulling strong at 6,500 RPMs and I get on the rev limiter which slows me down. When I adjusted the limiler to 7,100 RPMs I can feel the power start to fall off and shift before the engine reaches 7,100 RPMs. There is no need to take the engine above 6,000 RPMs in 1st or 2nd gear because of the engine torque. You always want to be in the highest gear possible and still be in the engine torque range when accelerating. However, in 3rd gear you can/will run the RPMs up to 6,800-6,900 then shift. The 7,100 RPM limiter is just for safety. My car will go 182-183 MPH in 5th gear at about 6,900-7,000 RPMs.
