largest tires that will fit on stock 15X8 rims? Drag Radials possible?

What are the largest size tires that safely fit on the 1979 15" X 8" optional aluminum wheels? I know the standard tires for '79 were P225/70R-15 and the optional tires were P255/60R-15. Can larger/wider tires work on these rims? What are the largest?

If I can fit larger/wider tires on these rims, I want to put BFG Drag Radials on them. Has anyone done so? What size(s) would you guys recommend? What will fit into the still stock rear wheel wells?

I have a set of BFG 275/50/15 Drag T/A's on steel rally wheels but, my parking brake cable brackets are moved to the top of the trailing arms and I have to pull of my rear sway bar for them to fit (I also jack-up my sping bolt or install a spacer between it and the spring to prevent them from bottoming and kicking out a halfshaft.) The problem with the 15" wheels is the lack of avaliable performance tires for that size wheel, there are a few "V" rated truck tires like the 255/60/15 Pirrelli Scorpions but not many choices in the 15" size (IS ANYONE OUT THERE LISTENING??)

I'm listening! I am looking for tires and can only find S or T rated. I saw the V rated Pirrelli Scorpions, but like you said they are for trucks and there is not much of a choice in size; although the 255' would fit.

No doubt.....those tires are 'leaking' over the edge of your rims if they're only 8" wide !!!
Check out this site ------> http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/tirecalc.html

This calculator recommends a 9.5" wide wheel for 275/50's ;)

I'd recommend 255/60 R-15's for an 8" rim. :yesnod:

I've seen 295/50R15's on 15 x 8 tires... The largest Drag Radial size would be 275/60R15. I used to run 275/60R15 Drag Radials on 15 x 8 inch rims with no problems...
