would bad brake fluid cause the ABS light to come on?
My LTI [1993] ASR and ABS lights [and sometimes a flashing red brake light on the dash ] keep coming on after mild braking. I seem to have only 50% braking.
I have checked brake fluid level [good ] and also brake pads...also good however on looking at the color of the brake fluid it is a browny/black and may be the cause of my problems. If the fluid is old or very dirty it may block up the ABS sensors and create the light to come on. Has anybody had similar problems or point me in the right direction?? Cheers for any help !! John |
You can short Pins A and G on your ALDL and see if any codes pop up on your dash under module 7.

When my alternator was shot the low current left in the battery caused it to come on too. Not saying that is your problem but make sure you have ample battery power from the alternator and battery.

Bad brake fluid
The first thing you should do if your brake fluid is brownish, is to flush it
and replace it with a synthetic. Its a cheap fix. Problem is that a large percentage of your brake fluid is now boiled brake fluid and water. :nono: |
I would say to also change the brake fluid. I know you said the fluid was full however, on my 1992 once at the track under hard braking both the ABS and ASR came on at the same time. Cause: the fluid was just a little low.
Good luck, Steven |
I'd flush and change with brake fluid that color anyway. It may or may not solve the problem, but it'll brake better.

Thanx for all those helpful replies. It is now fixed and i am as happy as a dog with 6 tails !!
I replaced the fluid and cleaned all sensors...some had iron filings on them which would not have helped. Reset the code "low fluid" and Presto !! No more lights and great brakes again. cheers again. |
