Code 43

Car set a code 42 so I changed the distributor module, that didnt fix it so I changed the ECM like others here have done. That fixed the code 42, but now I get a code 43, so I changed the knock sensor, no luck.
Any Ideas? :bigears

Follow the trouble shooting charts in your Helms for the various codes received. A code indicates that an out of parameter reading was sent by the coded source (sensor). That doesn't necessarilly mean that the source of the code was the cause of the code.

I have a Haynes manual, and it says to check the wiring and replace the knock sensor. I don't think that I have a ESC module, do I? If so I can't find it on my 91, its not on the side of the blower housing.

ttt. any other ideas?

I found a broken ground wire, but still have code 43, could it have damaged the new ECM or some other item? I disconnected the battery to reset the codes but still have 43

Haynes manuals aren't really good for specific trouble shooting... they try and cover everything... find the helms manual for your specific year... it'll help you track down the source of the problem...

OK, I got a flow chart for repair of code 43 from a mechanic I know. It leads to the ECM or the memcal (Prom). Got another ECM from Advance Auto and I still get code 43 right after startup.
Anyone have any ideas, I need help?

Thanks

Hi,

If you seen some of my threads on the same subject I have been chasing a similar problem.

I think in my case (maybe yours too) that it could be a false code 43. I think in my case its a ignition problem. Your 1991 is different than my 1992 (as I am sure you know).

So maybe what you could look at is what can cause a false code.

When I get this fix I will post.

Good luck,

Steven

I have no idea how that "flow chart" compares to a genuine Chevrolet Service Manual, printed by Helms, but you have far exceeded it's cost in unneeded parts. You can keep guessing and throwing money at it, or just go to www.helminc.com and buy the book. Maybe they will take slightly used, but unneeded parts, as payment.

Have you inspected the knock sensor? It may simply be caked with oil or grease and throwing a false code 43 on start-up. That's what the problem ended up being on my '92.

When it comes to auto repair ALWAYS assume the simple, first!
