The problem is really with the Corvette community - not necessarily the NCRS. It's all about provenance. At some level people pay a lot for provenance.

Miles Collier refers to certain cars as being "Historical Fictions". It's similar to Williamsburg. The finished product bears no relation to the history of the car. Just as Williamsburg bears no relation to the way people actually lived in the colonial era.

In order to maximize the value of the car (Duntov Award) the history of the car has to be destroyed. Race cars are not valued by the Corvette community as much as Duntov cars.

Destroying the provenance of a race car is probably not a good thing. On the other hand we have to be realistic about the value of the car.

Lots of questions here.

Richard ,
Great article on aluminum flywheels, thank you.
As far as Corvettes and other "high end" cars go, everything that is done is "for the dollars".
The hobby has turned into a business for many and that is not good.

If I could ever afford a C1 it would have do be done up old school racer style like many of these pictured cars it just seems right; they were a perfect drag car to be imo.

Remember reading and seeing pics of some of these as a kid in the 70s keep them coming good stuff!!

WOW!!!!! I really like this thread, lots of super awesome cars and like it been said not every one is restored to a bolt and nut NCRS condition...

Old racecars have personality and they have to be kept in that way...

More cool vettes please

John Mistachuks 62 was shipped from the states in 1978 and it should be now in Sweden.

Very very cool looking car

I'd be interest to know when in 1966 the record was set. I jointly held the D/MSP record with Dick Moroso. We ran 12.83, 108.30 at York in July 1966. The trick back then was to lower the record at least as possible so you got credit for the record, but you didn't bomb it so much that it was hard to run that at other tracks. Dick had a real skill for slamming on the brakes just at the right time before the lights to only lower it by a tenth or less. I can't recall exactly, but I think by the time he no longer ran that class he lowered the record to about 12.40's at around 110-112 mph. This was with a 327 block, but with over 700 lbs of lead added to the car. Car weighed closs to 3,800 lbs

GDC1962 ----- You sure had a stellar race car. It was both admired by fans and feared by competitors. If you recall, you actually set the E.T. record in July of 1966 at 12.79 and held it ( unheard of in those days) for for at least 4 months. I'll try to post a few more pics with some data tomorrrow. But while you are talking about adding weight --- this lead filled rear end housing is a fork lift job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And there was more!!!!!!! You know the gig.

Here is a picture of my uncles 57 that was raced in Michigan during the 70's, The Gorilla. I would love to find this car, please reach out to me if anyone is familiar with it:

And here is a later picture of my 63 racing, I was the only street driven car in my class back in the mid 70's:

Another good way to do it. What we did was build a box out of steel and filled it with about 100 7lb bars of lead. It was welded to the rear crossmember. A year or so later I remember we were at Englishtown and set 4 records on the same day. Both ET and MPH for D/MSP and C/MP. After setting the D/MSP records we loaded the car on the truck and cut off the box so it dropped on the bed of the truck. Went back to inspection and re-classed as C/MP and set both ends of that record. I think an hour or so after that one end of the C/MP record was broken again. This time by Ross Gilbert in his C/MP Chev. Did have all four for awhile though. Never ran in D/MSP after that.

GDC1962 ---- A good story Deloy tells is that when at Pomona either 66 or 67 he was actually a little heavy. They cut a hole in the bottom of the left side of the rear end lead compartment and melted lead out into a oil drain pan and kept weighing pan till they got it just right. The car also had a 4" solid steel bar bolted from frame rail to frame rail accross the back as well as a monster battery in the trunk. Also had a coil spring welded to the rear end housing on the right side only running up to the frame and welded. He never ran anything other than an open rear end with gears in the low 6's.

Default Some PoocH Data

GDC ---------You may be selling yourself short re the additional weight you said you were carrying of 800#. As I recall and stand to be corrected D/MSP was at 13.00 lbs per Cu. In. minimum which put your car weighing based on your 327 cu. in. a whopping 4251# or appx 1200# over the published curb weight. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joel - You jogged my memory. Get's a little fuzzy after 48 or so years.
We began the early part of the year running in C/MP which had a wgt ratio of 11.00 lbs per CI. The engine then was the 292 CI motor with the car having to weigh right around 3,200 lbs. It was 80, 7lb bars we used not 100. With the weight of the steel box we made to hold the bars would have brought it right around the necessary 3,796 lbs for D/MSP. Interesting that I found a couple more of the record certificate. One was for et of 12.88 and 105.14 at Island Dragway on 5/21/66, and the other for the MPH record of 108.04 at Sanford, ME on 6/19/66.

I always got a laugh when Dick was making a run and there we a lot of people around the starting line. In order to launch the car he had to bring the revs up to well over 9,000 (probably close to 10) grand before he dumped the clutch. With the engine screaming the people began to scatter ! Only thing that usually broke was the ring and pinion. Never lost a clutch (in fact the Ansen shield that was in the car had been in my '62 for the past 42 years).

You mentioned about using a heavy battery in Delroys car in the trunk. We only used a regular battery in the trunk, but that reminded me of a local driver, Bobby Lagana who used to run a '46 Plymouth coupe in C-Gas. I remember he came to Island Dragway for a National Meet and drove the techs crazy. Instead of a big battery in the trunk he mounted it above the trunk on the outside of the car. It was a huge battery from a fork lift truck and it was mounted with a big box and channel iron ! Needless to say tech wouldn't pass it that way. Wish I had a picture of it. He also made a fiberglass front end for the car. Not the usual way of making a plug, then a mold. No, he layed the fiberglass over the front end and the removed the steel parts leaving this rough ugly looking fiberglass. His method were crude but he did know how to make a car run. He later went on the run a funny car and more recently, his two sons Bobby, Jr and Dominick were running a top fuel dragster.

Yes, lots of good tails back then.
