Default New member....sad story

I have been visiting this forum since we ordered our C-7 this January. Lots of good info, and members seem to get along. This would be my second corvette, the first was a used '77 I bought at age 20. Can you say HIGH INSURANCE RATE ? (Girls liked it )

Fast forward to 4/21/16 and we get the call...car is ready. It is better than we expected, happy days and smiles per gallon are here. 7 miles on odometer and fun times ahead.

Now the sad part. At 71 miles, there was a "clunk and grinding sound from the rear end" and it went away. It happened two more times during a semi-hard brake the next time the weather was nice enough to drive. Talk to dealer about updating Android Auto, and to look into "strange sound". Turns out there are metal chunks and shavings in the rear end. Dealer can't look at it again for a week, GM wants to know what tear down reveals before allowing repairs. It was a fun 64 miles

Kind of bummed.

Sounds like you may be getting a new rear differential under warranty. While an inconvenience, it's pretty straight-forward. They'll get you buttoned up and back on the road.

Sorry you have to deal with something like that, but once you're back on the road it'll be a fading memory.

These things happen even with the best of auto manufactures and don't worry, it will be fixed.
On the other hand, the dealer and GM feedback (at least what the dealer claims GM told them) doesn't make sense. The dealership is not the place to tear down rear differential and evaluate it. GM should expedite a rear differential to your dealer no questions asked and have it replaced ASAP. My rear differential started making whining sound two weeks ago. The warranty manager at the dealer went with me for a quick test drive, confirmed the whining sound, then order a complete rear differential assembly 15 minutes later. It turned out that the rear differential is on backorder. A quick call to GM district manager and a new rear differential assembly was sent overnight to the dealership. My car is 3 month old.
This issue needs to get some attention at GM. Call GM, speak with the customer service manager, and demand a quick plan of action from them.
These things happen so no worries. It will be fixed and you will enjoy the car. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your problem. The Corvette tech at the dealership I go to had found that the rear fluid was low on a lot of new Corvettes being delivered by them. A conference call to GM was done and the problem went away for a while. The rear fluid level, I believe, is on the pre delivery checklist. He has found a lot of the vettes coming in for service that were bought at other dealerships had low rear fluid though and filled them. He has put the rear fluid check on his service check list no matter where the car was purchased.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the new Vette. I know it's a bummer to have problems this soon, but I'm quite sure your dealer will get you squared away and back in the saddle soon. Good luck.

So GM wants more info before authorizing repairs? Like they might say no? Are you kidding me?

You don't have it in your thread or profile, but is this a large-city dealer or a smaller dealer?

Well.. this is a true story. Not trying to stir any pot. As stated in my original post, "members seem to get along". When you pay 60+K cash for a vehicle that breaks down the first day, YOU MAY GET A LITTLE P#^**!$.

Yes it was from a small dealer, about as close to the end of the earth as possible.

Thanks all for the positive replies. Met with dealership owner today to put a little pressure on him. And yes..owner said "GM may require us to tear it apart before giving further directions on warranty work.

I really and truly feel for you especially since it's a brand new car and not a car with 80,000 miles on it. I don't know what else to say except to say, hang in there, this too shall pass.

BTW, do you have a base model or Z51?

Good to catch it early before real damage is done. They'll make it right.

I don't know why you'd say that---why did you? Since you joined the Forum, members have been having issues with the rear not being filled properly from the factory. As a matter of fact, there was a directive from GM to dealers to check the level before giving the car to a new owner. And then, GM made some corrections in production. It seems to me that one still snuck through.

What I don't understand is that with two different examples of expedited service/replacement on this thread, why this original poster (OP), and new-car owner has to go thru the teardown process. But, that may be a new requirement. I also agree with all the posters above that hopefully (and I think it will happen) this will be taken care of and all will be well in the future.

Sounds like it's a little late for catching it early.
