Default Gas smell

Hello all. I have a 2008 Base, C6 auto. I have the smell of gas coming from the drivers side wheel well area, as well if you sit in the driver's seat you can also smell it. I searched the entire car and can not locate a leak. I bought a new gas cap in hopes that would solve the problem, but it did not. I searched the form and located similar problems but all were on 2004's with the defective crossover pipe GM has since changed, and I have not over filled the tank. Any suggestions to this problem???? Thanks

Diet? Beanno or perhaps Gasex?

Although, if the smell is gasoline, I got nothing for ya!

All I know is that I wouln't continue to drive a car that smelled of leaking gas. I would have it transported to my nearest Chevy dealer and tell them to fix it.

Did you buy the car new or used? When did this problem start?

Mine had an occasionally gas smell the first couple of years. I haven't noticed it in the last couple.

Are you still under warranty? If so, you paid for it, use it. If you can smell gas, you have a leak. Yes, on the C-5's, the crossover tube is a problem on some cars and yet others never seem to leak. This is the first I've heard of fuel odor on a C-6.

The problem just started a few days ago, I've had the car for a year. I have stopped driving the car until I can get it to the dealer on Tuesday. The bumper to bumper warranty ran out two weeks ago. I still have the power train warranty left. I was hoping it would be something simple I could fix.

My son gets a gasoline smell in his rice burner and it's always the fuel filter, which has to be replaced regularly. We replace the filter and the smell goes away.

C5s have a lot of fuel smell issues but like the earlier poster, I haven't heard of that with the C6.

Take your car to the dealer. If you smell gas that is not something that should be ignored.

Try calling them right away in the morning and explain to them that this is a serious saftey issue and that your 3/36 just ran out two weeks ago. They/GM might step up and help you out on it or they might not. Either way, you have to get this fixed instantly.

Are you over filling the tanks when fueling? If you are filling the tank by using the auto fill on the pump handle, never go past the amount when it clicks off, don't even round off numbers. Over filling the tanks can cause over flow and gas smell. Other than that, take it to the Dealership, it should be cover under the 5 year/100,000 miles, always ask first if it's covered.

I never over fill the tank, when the pump kicks off I take the hose out. I will see the dealer tomorrow. I couldn't find anyone with the same problem with a C6. Thanks for the replys

On safety issues the warrantee never runs out, even though the "new" sleezebag GM seems to think so. Tell them to fix it at their expense immediately or suffer the consequences. If they don't respond favorably, lawyer up and go for the jugular!

Good advice. Hope the OP has a GOOD dealer and will work with him on this issue.

From another thread discussing a fuel odor:

This happened in my 2007 Z06 and it took me forever to find. No fuel leaking because it was on the top of the tank. The smell was terrible though in the garage or enclosed places especially after fill ups. Had to drop the tank to eventually find and repair.

I'm having a similar problem on my '09 Z06. Not very strong but still annoying (and sorta sickening) gasoline odor, mainly when driving around town with windows up and AC on. When I put the AC on recirculate, the odor goes away, as it does at highway speeds, and with the windows down at any speed.

So I assume it's coming in via the AC intake. Where is this -- at the base of the windshield on driver's side?

Car has had blower installed. No fuel pump work, but maybe some of the work under the hood involved fuel or evap emission lines.

Any suggestions?
