Default Bambi Basher

I have been driving for 31 years, had 18 cars, logged around 850,000 miles, and finally got my dream (bucket list) car this past December. My 2016 Z51 Racing Yellow Coupe, which has 3300 miles on it already

And this weekend... I hit my first Deer EVER! In the Corvette WTF!? 31 years and 18 cars... and I hit a Deer in this one!

I am so sad, my stomach has hurt for 2 days, I don't even want to drive it now. Damage seems to be limited to the bumper cover, inner fender well, and lower plastic bits underneath. I will have a body shop paint the bumper, and do all repairs myself... so sad.

Sorry to hear and see that. Probably the only car you've owned the deer could have jumped clear over if it would've time it a little better. Hope it's not too costly.
Must of been a bad day for deer on Thursday evening. This one was stumbling around in my driveway, so I took it to the animal ER. They asked if I wanted it euthanized or if I wanted it helped....Nearly $1500 later I guess I'm the proud new daddy of this Bambi. If it does well it will be brought back and released on my property.

Yeah, I have almost hit one once before, and I almost got around this one, just got him in the back legs. He was hit on the opposite side of the road by a truck first, and then shot straight at me while tumbling... it happened fast. I was doing 65.

wow...I'm so sorry for your accident!

In my C6 I hit a raccoon that was the size of pit bull on I95 (not as bad as deer but bad enough). It is no big deal I'm sure you will be able to get it fixed good as new.

On a side note, I dig your yellow stripe on the wheel. Is that one of those tape stripes or did you have it painted on?

That's a bummer. At least the damage is minor. Glad you're okay.

I can feel your pain and I would not want to drive it either until the damage is fixed. Good luck with the repair.

Dave, so so sorry. Fix it as soon as you can. Consider a pro so you have someone who can blame and have fix if it isn't to your ridiculously high standards.

Given where you live, this is about the only thing that could have happened. Given how much you like driving it, maybe it was bound to happen.. i think this would have gone over better if your car had more like 30,000 miles.

this is like having a girl friend that, you just learned, was a high end hooker for the previous 10 years. You're heart broken! She seems tarnished now! Here's a suggestion.. console yourself with making it better. Drive it after it's fixed and after you've made some other upgrades. You'll forget about the bumper. Pro charger? Exhaust?

Also, it's just the bumper. It could have been worse.

A confession: I forgot to latch down my roof in a hurry last Sunday, drove through a huge parking lot, out a residential street (at any point I could have remembered to latch down the roof), and then out on a main street. At 30mph my roof blew off. Into oncoming traffic.

And that was my mistake.

And i was sick to my stomach for 2 days beating myself up for being so f&^Cking stupid.

Suddenly my car felt like a chore. That's gone away, but I cringe when I see my roof (it still works and the scratches, though numerous and deep, can't be seen from a distance).

Of course you and I bought this car to drive it. I knew something was going to happen.. I've had it since November and I have 11,000 miles on it.

So, let me sum it up:

1) A well driven car is bound to take some bad luck
2) Your damage is limited, thank god
3) Leverage it into something nice for yourself to make you excited about it again
4) Time heals everything.

Deer can cause a lot of damage and I would consider you lucky.

While I was "planning my future" after I was discharged in 73, I worked at a service station on the mainland side of the bridge to Long Beach Island and I was often sent out with the wrecker to pull cars out of the woods off the Garden State Parkway, many times after hitting deer. After bringing those cars back to the station, you could see all the damage caused by hitting a 300-400 pound deer at 60 MPH. NOT a pretty sight.

I hope that situation never happens to me as I think I could not let the deer get euthanized and live with myself.

Living deep in the country it is only a matter of "when", instead of "if" one gets into a deer/car incident. Nearly all the local people I know had hit a deer or, mostly, the deer hit their car by blindly charging out of the forests. I came within inches from hitting them several times. My wife hit a large bear last year that ran blindly into the road.

Driving a car with a low hood makes you think; you hit an large animal at speed and it will come right through the windshield. No wonder most people drive pickup trucks around here.

Hate to see this Dave. Our city has allowed builders to eviscerate the deer's habitat around here, and they have no place to go. So, they are in the roads also. Check with your insurance company, your comprehensive should pay for the cost of damages. Good luck.

VERY sorry this happened to you. Glad to see the damage was limited and this obviously could have been much worse! We lived in Pagosa Springs, Colorado for many years where deer and elk are a way of life. We had many close calls but never hit one. But so many people hit deer and elk in our county that our insurance rates went up because of it.

And here is a tip for folks not used to traveling through deer and elk country: If you find yourself it a situation where hitting a deer or elk is unavoidable, try very hard to let off of the brake at the last second before impact. Your obvious reaction is to slam on the brakes. That lowers the nose of the car and raises the odds that the deer or elk will slide up the hood and into the windshield. If you can keep your wits about you and let off the brake, that will raise the nose back up and hopefully give you a better chance of deflecting the animal off to the side. Better to damage the car then to injure yourself or your passenger! Granted, Corvettes are low to the ground regardless but anything you can do to give you a better chance of keeping the animal from coming through the windshield is a plus. I know, easier said than done when the deer come out of nowhere!

Sorry about the damage to your car, but a good body shop will make it look like new. I'm sure once it is repaired you'll enjoy getting behind the wheel again and taking the car out for a drive.
