Default 1963 Daytona Blue formula

I have tried to find a current formula but cannot, my painter thought he had it. But his has a purple tint in the sun light. Others report purple or red tints.

That is a hard color. There where 3 of them in our vette show and of the three only one was the correct color. My sons 63 has factory pack lacquer on it from the eighties and it is perfect. Good luck

The original panel on my car I had tested had quite a bit of purple in it- mind you there is years of UV affecting many original paint cars. I didn't want a purple one, wasn't about to risk it.

As I noted in my build thread, I have read about how inconsistent people's idea of correct Daytona Blue is. So I painted mine BMW late model Imperial Blue (also metallic) after seeing a few. It appears exactly as I thought it should. Life's short!

Good luck!

It would behoove you to have some test panels sprayed so you can observe the finished result. I wish I had done this first.

I signed off on having the painter spray my car 916 Daytona Blue. The end result was the BC/CC color turned out too light and too 'purple', especially in certain light conditions.

The overall paint job turned out nice, just the wrong shade. Even Prius dark blue would have been a closer match to Daytona Blue than what turned out. out. I call it 'Daywronga Blue'.

I have test panels, that's why I knew it was wrong. The 1 that directed me to original, I also knew about it , but it is original codes, cannot be converted to modern paint systems. And I did email the one pm that was sent to me , but an auto response stated he was away for now. SO I'M STILL LOOKING. Thanks for all responses , but more help needed. Roger

10 years ago I painted my car what I thought was Daytona blue and I also feel like I settled for something close, rather than something right. My painter came up with "Diplomat Blue", and couldn't even find "Daytona", but said it was the same. Maps to the 916 paint code, and said it converts to a Spies "KN", whatever that means. It just doesn't seem as dark as I remember the original being, and the closer you get to the car, the bluer and lighter it gets.
Found this site that talks about all the GM 1963 and 1964 cars that used this color, and their promotional names: http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/paintdet...Daytona%20Blue
Following this post with great interest, for an eventual answer. Thanks Roger, for starting this thread.

Greatly interested in this post.

Many years ago, one of the instructors at a Bloomington Gold paint/body workshop told me that it was next to impossible to match the metalflake grain in '63 Daytona Blue.

Basically, they believed the flakes available at the time (early 90's) were too coarse and the factory flakes mixed into the paint were much finer.

I have no idea as to the accuracy of this information or how it applies to current modern paints. Just passing this along for any comments.

I just painted my 64 this winter.....Daytona Blue...

We used Dupont's ChromaBase # 916. Base coat / Clear coat.

This apparently is also known as "Diplomat Blue" depending on what GM product is was used on.

This according to the veteran paint mixologist....it has all the metal flake and came out spot on as he guaranteed it.

there should be a sticky for paint codes deemed acceptable or good starting points.

Criticism critical and expected.

Other cars whose color closely matches would also be nice to have, like the BMW blue noted here.

Set aside the air pressure, color, millage, prime, angle and speed of the gun. We know that has an impact. Just get us in the ball park.

Why not ask highly regarded corvette restorers?

Another vote for the Dupont option.

It was a few years ago, but at that time, the Dupont offset (BC/CC) was close to perfection.

May have changed, but worth spraying a test strip.

I too was looking at the BMW color "Imperial Blue" however I only have seen it with the metallic. Were you able to obtain with less or zero metallic.

Thanks

No, it does have metallic in it. How acceptable the level is will be a matter of taste for you. If you look in my build thread toward the end there are a few full sun shots where the metallic is visible. In the shade it appears solid trending toward black - as I felt DB should.

There is metallic in Daytona blue, although there are pretty cars running around on a solid sort of variant and I like them as well.
