Default Too hot to handle...the story of a C6 rescue

Hello all,

In my introduction I said I would post a build thread on my rescue of a beautiful Monterey Red C6 Convertible from an early retirement.

The story begins with a web search on a whem. I checked our local IAAI salvage auction yard just to see what happened to be of interest. Currently was driving a rebuilt Jaguar XF, but the whole four door sedan thing was just not fulfilling my desires. I happened to come across some very poor pictures of an '07 C6 Convertible which appeared to have pulled an Icarus and had flown too close to the sun.

However, the listing did not disclose this poor Vette had languished in the yard for the past year awaiting it's fate to be determined.

By the time the auction came around, she had been sitting and was filthy and forlorn. I was able to outbid the vultures and made my purchase. With a jump box she cranked and ran beautifully so I moved her out of the car penitentiary and waited for my rollback to arrive.

The first order of business was to replace the tires. The left two were melted on the sidewalls and the ones on the right had been sitting in the dirt lot for the previous year.

Stay tuned as I continue to update the build process...

We got everything pulled down and to our surprise, there was no inner structure damage or melting. Even the window rubber was pliable and showed no signs of heat damage.

Interesting! Depending on what you paid for it, you may have gotten a good deal.

I usually do ok. I don't rebuild cars to make money, I have a career in IT that pays the bills. I play with cars because it gives me to opportunity to drive anything I want...without the huge depreciation. Last summer I rebuilt an XLR. While I loved it, I thought this year I would get the real thing

Sounds like a neat way to drive a variety cars without losing a lot of money in depreciation. I wish I had the skills to do the same.

Did you know the engine would run before you bid on it?

Update! I went by the shop this afternoon and it is getting close

They have finished the front and were working on the tail. I have to be out of town tomorrow on business, but they should be wet sanding and buffing tomorrow for a Thursday pickup

I snapped a quick pic of the front

Might have a problem with the driver window though. I purchased a complete door but when they hooked the switches up, the driver window will just twitch a 1/4" or so up or down. ....so gonna start doing some research here on the forum and see what might be the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

It was listed as a "Run and Drive" which means mechanically it "should" be ok. I have been burned a couple times though, and I have been pleasantly surprised. I have a Jeep Commander Limited with the 5.7 Hemi I use as a tow vehicle for my toys and bought it from a SC auction sight unseen and it was NOT a run and drive. Stole it for $2700 and when it arrived I was expecting to replace the motor. Nope, installed a battery and drove it off the truck with 63k miles on it It had been rolled over so I had to have the body work done on it and a full body paint, but it has been an awesome truck. On the flip side, I bought an Audi A4 for my son that had minor front and undercarriage damage and was listed as run and drive...and the engine was toast because they had busted the oil pan and ran it without oil...knocking like crazy.

I guess you take your chances and see what you get. One thing for sure - you got IMHO the best color ever! ( I might be a bit biased)
