Default Arkansas man grabs fob from salesman and steals new Stingray

Arkansas Online
By Brandon Riddle

Jonesboro police say a man, while speaking with a car salesman, grabbed the keys to a $68,365 Chevrolet Corvette and drove away from the dealership — shortly after saying the sports car was out of his price range.

The salesman at Central Chevrolet Co., 3207 S. Stadium Blvd., told police that the prospective buyer, whose identity was not known, was looking at vehicles Wednesday afternoon.

When the man expressed concern over the price of a black Chevrolet Corvette, he then began walking in the direction of Chevrolet Camaros on the lot but asked to see the Corvette’s key fob along the way, according to a report.

Police said the man then grabbed the key fob from the salesman's hand, ran to the Corvette and drove off the lot.

The man was described in the report as “a younger, black male, well-dressed.” He was last seen traveling south on Interstate 555, according to authorities.

OnStar, an in-vehicle security service installed in the Corvette, was notified by authorities of the theft. Tracking of the vehicle began shortly after, and an engine block was initiated to prevent the sports car from being restarted once shut off, police said.
UPDATE:

The $68,000 Stingray was found after being wrecked by the thief. You can watch the news report and see the wrecked Stingray here:

UPDATE...

Corvette stolen from Arkansas car lot found wrecked, abandoned, police say

Story by Brandon Riddle
Friday, July 22, 2016

A Chevrolet Corvette stolen from the lot of a car dealership earlier this week in Jonesboro was found wrecked and abandoned Thursday in Crittenden County, according to police.

Details regarding the discovery of the sports car were not immediately available Friday afternoon, though a responding officer wrote in a report that he noticed “several stains” when processing the vehicle at a collision shop.

The black 2016 Corvette, which was taken by an unidentified man Wednesday while speaking with a salesman at Central Chevrolet Co., 2307 S. Stadium Blvd. in Jonesboro, was then swabbed. Test results showed the stains were not consistent with blood, police said.

The prospective buyer had expressed his concerns over the $68,365 valuation of the sports car before requesting to see the Corvette’s key fob and taking it as the salesman opened his hand, Arkansas Online previously reported.

Police said the man, described as a "well-dressed" younger black man was last seen traveling south on Interstate 555. A suspect had not been named as of Friday afternoon.

"It is believed that the suspect had to climb out of the passenger side of the vehicle," the officer stated. "I dusted for prints and a palm was visible. I lifted the print, and it was of no value."

Corvettes exist in the real world, not an internet bubble. Nothing more, nothing less.

There's one more reason you don't need OnStar. That car wasn't going anywhere after being shut off even without their restart lock out.

I thought that OnStar could track the car and also shut down the engine.

What good is it to lock out the restart? Out here in the boonies we call that locking the barn door after the horse is stolen .

I'm surprised they didn't use the "Stolen Vehicle Slowdown" feature. Or, maybe they did, and the guy still wrecked it?

Stolen Vehicle Assistance4

If your vehicle is stolen, OnStar can use GPS to pinpoint it and help authorities quickly recover it. On many models, an Advisor can send a signal to slow the vehicle or prevent it from restarting.

Remote Ignition Block™
Thieves won't get far with Remote Ignition Block.™ Once a vehicle has been reported stolen, OnStar can send a remote signal that blocks the engine from starting. When a thief tries to restart it, he may think he's made a clean getaway, but he’s not going anywhere.

Stolen Vehicle Slowdown®
OnStar can send a Stolen Vehicle Slowdown® signal to help authorities recover your vehicle and reduce high- speed pursuits. Once the police confirm that conditions are safe, we can send a signal that gradually slows the vehicle. The police can move in quickly, and it won’t be long before you’re headed out in your recovered car.

Theft Alarm Notification26
This new feature gives you extra peace of mind every time you lock* your vehicle’s doors. If your car alarm sounds, OnStar will notify you immediately by text27, email, or phone call (your choice) to quickly and safely recover your vehicle. After you report your vehicle as stolen, contact an OnStar Advisor for Stolen Vehicle Assistance.

Onstar cannot initiate vehicle slowdown unless the car is under observation of police and they report it is safe to do so. If the thief causes an accident and hurts someone because of the slowdown activation, GM could be liable.

Thus they did the most that they could do...prevent restart.
