5 Speed Must Be Tremec 600/500 ?
Is there a lighter weight transmission that would mate to a 350 set up be an upgrade to Muncie and have a 5th gear OD ?
Fords can use a Tremec 600/500 or a T5 series for less torque.
I'd match a clutch and don't mind swapping bells but just feel Tremec 600/500 is overkill....seeking advice.

I installed a GM World Class T5 in my '66 L79 3 years ago . . . love it!

I will contact American Powertrain this week to see if they would put together a World Class GM T5 conversion kit for me.

I followed Tom"s advice and rebuilt and installed a WC T5 myself. After sorting a clutch linkage issue I really like it. Cruising at 70 mph in a sidelipe car at 2K RPMs. Plus there is plenty of tunnel clearance for the installation and smooth, quick shifts.

[QUOTE=Jam421;1592693909]Thanks Tom. This would be exactly what I'd like to do !

Actually . . . none of the transmission companies will be able to put together a World Class GM T5 conversion kit for you! The GM WC T5 is no longer in production. I did the conversion myself (as have many others who have installed one in a C2) starting with a WC GM T5 from an "89 Camaro. My bellhousing is from an '83 Camaro. I made the transmission mount, modified the shifter and made the clutch pushrod all myself. This conversion is a "do-it-youself" project that involves finding the right T5 to start with (there are a few still on ebay) and lots of trail and error to make it work. But . . . it can be done for @ 1/3 the cost of an aftermarket kit.

You can do a Google search for T5 information. There is a web site that shows the gear ratio's offered in every T5 by model number. Many of these were built and installed in 4 and 6 cyl cars and the gear ratio's would be all wrong for a V8 engine.

I spoke with one vendor who advised the T5 cannot be modified like the Tremec with the sidewinder shifter that aligns with the center console shifter location. Were you guys able to overcome that ?

YES - we have all overcome this issue by using a GM "tilted" bellhousing that rotates the T5 17 degrees off center and toward the driver. When GM first began installing T5's in Camaro's, rather than re-engineer the cars floorpan (very expensive) they simply came up with this new bellhousing. There are 2 vesrions that were used - a mechanical one (like mine made only in '83) and a hydraulic one used in '84 and newer models. Here's a photo of mine:

Yes, the Tremecs are fine pieces - I've run one in my '61 for years....shifting is a bit notchy and 2-3 upshifts at speed takes some finesse and the fit is tight in the tunnel but they work nicely...
