I don't have a personal opinion as I haven't researched the base models at all. Good luck to you.

I picked 2008 and later models just because of the newer interior design in the LS3 but that's just me
Oh yeah and something about revised steering feel starting in 08 iirc

There is no bad choice. Buy what you can afford and drive the wheels off of it. Shop around and kick the tires and welcome aboard.

Thos GS guys think their poop don't stink too. The base cars are the best value and bang for your buck. The 05 is a great car and 06 is a little better and 07 and 08 etc. Buy the newest you can afford.

I drove a 2000 and was set on a C5 then just to be sure I drove a C6. C6 is a totally different car, I decided on a 2008 and newer for the LS3. I waited until I found a 2008 in the price range I wanted and jumped on it, the LS3's in the $ I was looking seem to get snatched up pretty quickly. IMO I would search for the 08 and up.

I have a 05 (1SB, Z51 option), but will tell you with any Vet, you want at least the Z51 option, or a Z06 isntead.
As for the GS, it has the Z51 option, but also has the wide body and upgrades found on a Z06 vet. Hence the GS cars replaced the base cars with the Z51 option instead.
So if your trying to figure out if the base car has the Z51 option, just look at the sticker in the glove box.
Here are the code options for the car, and if it was me, would want it to have not only the Z51 and 1SB code, but the MN6 code as well (hence the 2005's only had a 4 speed automatic transmission, not the automatic 6 speeds of the later cars). So if you want a vet with an auto trans, get a later vet with the 6 speed auto trans isntead.

As for once you have found the vet you are thinking of buying with the options you want, get a GM service history report on the car before you even look at it (just need the vin number and there are few sponsoring dealer here that will pull the GMSV for you. If the service history report check out as being clean (will have about 5 recalls on the 2005 that should show up on the report, so these are normal), then when you go to look at it, take someone that knows the vets well to take a good look at the car for you (up on a lift as well). When you are talking vets, they are spendy as hell if something needs to be repaired, and you want the dealer/owner selling the vet to take care of the problems before you even buy it.
Hence what may be passed off as a cheaper repair, may only be the tip of the iceberg, and if such falls on your lap/check book to repair, could get into the thousand of dollars quickly instead.

Why do you want a Z51 or Z06 instead? The price is horrendous. I bought a 2009 C6 Base with 9,800 miles on it Mint condition and under $29K 2 weeks ago....The 430 HP is plenty...

Go drive a Z51 option base or Z06 hard, and it will answer your question. Hence it's not about power in the case of the z51 option base car, but the lower initial gearing, better handling, and even better brakes instead. Add in the extra coolers when pushed hard, and it's a no brainier.
As for the Z06, it take the above to the next level isntead.
To add, you don't have a clue on how much power your car really has.
Once you de-hobble the TM that is holding back instant powder to the ground, and remap the throttle mapping to really give you the 430hp on command, it's a whole different beast.
Truth is, most of the guys that hop up their motors, still have the soccer mom throttle mapping, the TM still holding back power, and the mods that they did to give them the increase air chair dyno number, is no where near what the motor is able to put out on demand de-hobbled isntead. So guys screaming that they need more power, already have it without any mods needed, and it just a matter of allowing the motor to unleash all it has now instantly on demand isntead.
