I know this light usually doesn't mean much. Maybe a bad oxygen sensor or some other smog item, but since I'm planning on a trip at the end of the week I just wanted to check with you experts to make sure it's no big deal, other than aggravating the hell out of me. I was planning on taking it in early this week for an oil change. Does the dealer charge much for a diagnosis of this light? Thanks to all.

I had a CEL come on a few weeks ago. Took it to the local tire place that mounted my new tires. They checked the CEL for free and reset it. It was an 0420 code which was the right side cat or left...can't remember which. They are 0420 and 0430. Anyway, call around and see if a local shop will tell you what the code is. Many will do it for free in hopes you will let them fix it. I'm not sure they can identify every CEL on the car but you might get lucky. My 08 Z06 needed a new cat and it only had 9000 miles. Thank god the cat warranty is good until 2/17! Good luck.

Safety Car
Get the code checked. It could be anything. Usually if it isn't flashing it isn't a huge deal but check it. If it's a front sensor it could make the car difficult to drive and damage your cats.

It never did flash. Just came on when I started the car and stayed on. I'll have it checked before I take it on a trip. Thanks.

If you haven't checked the in service date on your vehicle...do it now. I got lucky with mine and the cats were still under warranty until 02/17. I think catalytic converters are 8 years covered from in service date.

Cats are an emissions component that the EPA imposes longer warranty lengths upon car mfgrs to extend to owners. I believe it is 8 years/80,000 miles.

I just got off the phone with my local Chevy dealer. Just to check the code starts at $110. WTH? Autozone, etc does it for free? That seems a little bit outrageous to me!
