A chance to drive 180+mph - should I try?
Hey people,
I have a new Z06 with 4k miles. There is an event at an airport in the desert in California where, for a fee, I can accelerate for up to one mile and a half. It's an opportunity to take the car (and me) to its limits. But this is my daily driver and I am wondering if pushing it all the way runs a big risk of heat soak or other problems that I may regret later if all does not go well. The event is called the Mojavi Magnum and it looks like it would be outrageously fun. Anyone have any thoughts about this. I know in the long run it is up to me, but I would appreciate any constructive ideas. Thanks

This would be the RUSH of a lifetime and maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity, doing this LEGALLY with no worries about breaking serious laws, going to jail and getting your car impounded!
You don't have to worry about heat soak for one major head rush run like that (go for it if your so inclined, certainly would)!

Check your tires, fluids, remove the stage 2 aero bits from the rear hatch to gain some top end, get to a decent operating temp and ... go have a blast!
Nothing feels better than touching the floor with the go pedal and just leaving it there. Nothing,

Two words.....do it! I ran both days this spring, with 14 passes total and am still smiling. Thanks cvp for posting my best run! The venue is well run and very safe considering the speeds. The runway is over 300 feet wide and 12,500 ft long. Even with a heavy cross wind on Saturday and level 1 aero, the car was planted on the big end. I believe you would need to put in a harness bar and 5/6 pt harness to run above 185.....which I have done and need for other events. Temperatures when I ran were 70-75 but even in warmer weather I would not worry about heat soak or OH. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the event or the using the Z.

have you had any high speed driving training? Do you have a nomex driving suit? Helmet (and not a motorcycle helmet either), driving shoes with nomex, driving gloves that have nomex in them....see where this is going......if the car goes off the road do you know what to do to avoid a major accident?
If you have done you homewor...ok.......have you even taken the car down the dragstrip a few times to get a bit of the feel? If your answer to any of the questions is no....then you have your answer....NO!

Yes do it....it's safer amd smarter than 90 percent of the guys who run above 150 on a local highway At night...
Just go have fun and if you feel your travelling too fast for your comfort level you can always back off the throttle.
The car and you will be fine...
We ve all probably run over a buck fifty on the highway at one time or another. Doing it in a safe environment as you described will be even better.
It's fun.

That being said if this is out of your comfort zone from your own safety perspective and you are not comfortable doing this then don't do it.

Are you ready for the potential of something going wrong? Do you have appropriate safety gear? (have you seen the cars that flip, roll, tumble at those speeds? None of them thought it would be THEM).
I have firesuit, glove, socks, shoes, helmet, hans, but still would not until I had a roll bar/cage.
At those speeds, you need friends. The kind that save lives.

Melting Slicks
No questions things happen. But people drive their cars flat out every day in Europe on public highways and do just fine. Check your tires, tire pressures and lug nut torques. If you've plugged or patched a tire, replace it before the event. Then go have fun. There is risk in just driving over to the event. Just mitigate it as best you can and live life.

That is a novice ideology. There's a difference between "driving flat-out" and taking high-risk thrill seeking ventures while ill-prepared. While I largely believe (and do) in having fun in my Z, I make the necessary preparations....again and again.
Having spent countless days at the track and witnessing those who "just live life" includes seeing a driver who decided to bring his 700HP car that didn't have appropriate safety or brake upgrades, end up flipping over the wall after his brakes failed in Turn 1, culminating in a broken neck and his trachea hanging out when EMS got to him...flew him out, but he was gone before the chopper even arrived.
It happens. Have fun, but stack the cards in your favor, for sure. I take the calculated risks, but am continually looking at ways to increase the odds.

Burning Brakes
I did 180 in my c6z while racing a guy on the highway. It was so fast I never realized I reached it till I looked down. You should do it once at least.

Go for it!!!! Will not be a problem and you will have good safe fun. Had my Z up to 140 on the highway would have pushed more but didn't feel comfortable because of cops and it was the interstate.

Just remember that at 180 when things go bad, they go bad in a hurry....don't expect a safe landing.
