Took my catch can off...got a gentle suggestion from my dealership
As the thread states...I took my Elite catch can off this afternoon.
WHAT A PAIN!! - getting that plug out was a mess!!
I got my Z back from the dealership - I had a failed Cat that was replaced under warranty. My service mechanic was awesome about my car. He did ask about my can and said that if I have any other failures with the exhaust or motor in general - I won't be covered as changing the way the car operates internally was not going to work with GM. So that would kill the power train warranty. No Bueno
As an aside - the can seemed to work very well. With 4K miles of using it I pulled the cover. Very little oil! The can had 2oz of oil it collected.
So take it for what it's worth. Just wanted to pass some info on.

That was a very worthwhile visit and conversation. But, really, you did know that the alteration might have consequences, right?

That's pretty sad. I wonder how many dealers are becoming this strict. I've had dealer do warranty work in the past with intake, Headers, exhaust, and tune. Guess my new z will have to stay stock for a while.

Per my dealer, aftermarket exhaust and intake are fine, but a tune or any additional component, such as a catch-can that alters the original engine dynamics or programming is what GM is concerned about.

^^^ Exactly. I have run cans for years.
Might put it back on after my warranty is up. Just going to watch the oil accumulation

I thought the same thing since a direct swap of the exhaust or CAI is fine, but I guess the catch can is considered an add-on. I've been running catch cans since the LS1 with no problems. It's not too hard to remove if you need remove for GM service.

^^^^ This ! And, it's only going to get worse. What with all the emissions cheating in the automotive industry and the massive fine just leveled against Harley-Davidson for illegal tuners, the aftermarket is just going to have to suck it up.

Isn't this essentially BS? Or am I being ignorant? How could a catch can, which stops the engine from ingesting it's own oil, cause any failure what so ever? Makes zero sense to me.

So why take a chance on a catch can voiding your warranty if oil ingestion is not an issue??

At least one person had the plug come loose and trashed the blower.

Or more importantly if you're only getting 2 ounces of oil in 4000 miles, then why bother. People freak out about oil getting sucked in and I do agree too much oil can effect the octane, etc. But 2 ounces of oil is not going to effect anything over 4000 miles. Just my opinion, maybe some expert engine builders can chime in.
So why take a chance on a catch can voiding your warranty if oil ingestion is not an issue??

One thousandth of one ounce per mile... that's more than zero, but is it anything? I really don't know. Wish I did!

This has been in effect for a while. Back in 2007 I also got a gentle reminder from my dealer about mods potentially affecting warranty. So this is nothing new.

Sort of like cosmetic mods such as blacked out side markers and tail lights. We can argue that they don't alter anything, however they only provide an excuse for the LEO to pull you over. GM can use that same rationale to reject a warranty claim with a bolted on catch-can.
I think it's silly, but as a business, GM is covering their pocket books.

Exactly ! And, I'll take it a step further. Most of those modding their tail lights or side markers by tinting them are giving their insurance carrier an out as regards a damage claim. Ditto future litigation.
