Default "Velocity Yellow" is a very vexing color

My 2007 is in the shop and the shop is attempting to get the front bumper correct. Water-based paints are mandated here in the SF Bay Area and the shop's supplier is PPG.

They've shot a number of variations on the color and none of them match. The new color is being put over the old color and not over a primer. Based on the original scrape that is being fixed the underlying primer was whitish colored. The variations have some sort of code numbering which seems to imply that there are a number of "velocity yellow's". I don't know where the codes come from.

The original paint looks somewhat transparent. I'm sure the factory uses just enough to satisfy the eye. We both think there's the slightest trend toward green but very very subtly. The new paint has a "creamier" solid look to it and the color is close but not right.

So far they've:

- exhausted the known variations sprayed onto color cards
- had the paint supplier out to "scan" the car without success

The shop's next step is to have the PPG rep come out and get his or her input.

Any tips on getting this right would very much be appreciated.

Your talking about a color that is now 10 years old. And depending on how much time it's spent in the sun over the years, will vary it's color. There are various types of color that are a bitch to match ... yellow happens to be one of them. Best advice, try a few different shops, probably a high dollar one is gonna be your best choice.

I do have some kick *** boots, various weapons and a truck so I could make a stab at fitting in. But that's a bit over the top.

Lots stuff to do here, very scenic, your mom will never forget it. My next door neighbor came out here in 89. Was going to meet her for dinner, and then .... earthquake. Nobody moved anywhere. She never forgot that either.

But, on topic, do you remember any details (e.g. paint brand) about your VY redo?

I actually liked Millennium Yellow better but it's a matter of taste. I do see a hint of green in the color and the best spray panel the shop put together had that but we both agreed it wasn't going to completely work out. My shop is not charging for all this screwing around and he is a very responsible person so I'm sticking with him.

Waiting to hear if PPG is going to come out and have a look. My concern is that this paint job was done by robots and that will be impossible to duplicate.

it won't be impossible.

Even Home Depot will mix the paint to match your house.

Find another shop.

MY is an orange tint yellow. In my opinion, the green tint makes VY the brighter of the two colors. My wife generally hates yellow cars but she really liked VY and gave me the ok to order my 06Z in VY. Five years before, she told me if I bought a MY 01Z, "don't bother coming home with it!!"

I think that VY has a red tint to it, that's what I was told when I picked up my VYZ06 at the Corvette Museum, but Its been eleven years, so maybe my brain thinks they said RED.

My painter told me that he could see the gray under the paint. That is what made it hard to match.
Good luck

I seem to recall that the clear coat is tinted as well, so you'll want to check that.

After nine years, it would be expected that the original color would not match...the paint on the car is no longer the original color. Paint shops have a small device that is placed on the paint and it reads the color that it must match. It then tells the shop exactly what to put in the paint mix in order to match what is on the car. I've seen it work well. I remember PPG calling theirs the "Prophet" I think. It is a spectrophotometer. It was a long time ago, I'm sure they have a different name for it now.

Yeah, the water based paint is less durable too. The primer color underneath can affect the tint of the paint also. They can blend and buff the surface to help match it. I considered a local shop in my area for the repairs on my Vette. Refused to give them the work because they insisted on using water based paint. I ended up taking my car five hours away for paint because of this and so many butcher shops in my area that do poor work. Maybe you could take your car to Nevada for repairs?

Best of luck on the match, 2k

Don't remember much...years ago. It was at a dealer. I was nervous when they said it wouldn't have the tint coat like from the factory. Still came out good.

It is definitely not a red tint. Under fluorescent lighting, you could see the green sheen on my VY Z06 that I owned for five years.
