Default Fire Extinguishers

For those that carry one in your 'pride and joy' what are your recommendations ..............

I've heard that the H3R performance units are the best ?

Which ever unit you buy make sure you go to a fire fighting school. You need to learn how to use an extinguisher. Just having one in your car is not enough. Most local fire departments offer classes and some private companies do the same.

Here's an article I wrote earlier this year about fire extinguishers. It deals with your home garage but the information applies to any small extinguisher.

Richard, good advice. In my company (railroad) we hold a safety picnic each year and invite EMT / local Fire Dept in for such instruction, especially on different types of fires.

Unless you enjoy perhaps screwing up an engine or at least having a PITA cleanup. Been there, done that got the T-shirt and coffee cup...

But there remains something to clean up. Not a result always obtained when using Halon in an open air situation such as found by the side of a roadway. Dry chemical extinguishers work.

This argument could go on forever. I originally had two Halon units for my car. I started reading a couple of threads that indicated the ABC type extinguishers were better for under hood fires when in an open air area due to the quick dissipation of the Halon gas. I purchased a couple of Amerex ABC units to replace my Halon units. Then another thread comes along and one of the members says that the ABC units are not the best. Go with the BC units. When the A is added to the BC it dilutes the strength of the BC chemicals. So now, I think I'll have to pick up two BC extinguishers and carry all three types. That way I'll have all avenues covered until someone else comes along and advises me that there is a fourth option.

Any Halotron type will be great, 2.5lbs is the smallest I would go with. Been using them for over a decade, never once on my own cars tho thank god!
