Drag racing my 60
Last Sunday they had the last Flashlight Drags of the season so I decided to try it. Had a blast !!! Flashlight Drags are held on an airport runway, they used to have a girl with a flashlight start the races (just like the old days) , but due to insurance issues that had to stop. It's run what ya brung , heads up, just line up with anybody you choose and have at it. No trophies or time slips, just for fun and bragging rights. I made 10 passes and got to race a Hemi Cuda. He beat me , but not by much. The Elky in the pic was a drag car w/slicks and he smoked me bad.
It did however cost me a set of water pump gaskets, but I'm getting pretty good a changing them and am looking at a better setup, along with a set of DR's. My tires just spun even on a mild launch.
If you ever get the chance to try this-Do it !!

We need more of those bring and race whatch'a got racing everywhere. Thats how the NHRA got started in Los Angeles by a LAPD police officer to get the racing off the streets. Now there is only one 1/4mile strip in the whole LA metro area way out near San Bernadino (CA Speedway). Its really a shame when the authorities can and will have your car crushed for street racing.
We have Midnight Madness here at the Las Vegas Speedway strip each month and it fills the stands with drivers from California, Utah, Arizona. Larger attendance than NHRA bracket racing. No water in the water box but for $15 we can race past midnight - I get 10 runs in unless my car breaks.
Yea racing is the only way to learn what your can do or what the car really needs. We need open racing everywhere and all year round.

I got a pretty hot 355, backed up with a super t-10 into a 4.11 rear. The car is quick but didn't have enough traction and weight transfer. The 10inch MickeyT's were overwhelmed. I found out I was one of the few cars running a stick. Shame there were no other old Vettes a few c-5's and 6's. I'll be back next yr with a set of drag radials and maybe a ford 9 in.
BTW, it only cost $30 to enter. Cheap fun !!

You're right, cheap fun. I try to get my '70 Z28 to the track a couple times a year. I have a BLAST every time.....
When I finish my '54, it will have its turn down the 1/4 mile.

I can help you on the traction problem, But you will blow that stock chevy rear the first time you race.
I hope you have the "Vetrod front motor mount design". If not you will never stop the "water pump gaskets" problem. And wow no top on the car. Very cool. Jim

Races are held at the Waynesburg Co. airport in SW Pa.
Planning on a Ford 9" ,a set of traction bars and Hoosier drag radials. C'mon Cuda ! Rematch.
I think welding straps to the mm and picking up the lower holes in the block might fix the water pump problem. Took me about 1 hr to change out the gaskets, even using studs the inner gaskets were destroyed.
Convertibles have to wear a helmet and seat belts. Nooo problem.

In my neck of the woods, we have; "The Digs At Englishtown" 3 times/season. Cars 35 and older, 12 bucks. Relaxed atmosphere and almost unlimited passes if you want to.

Sweet photo ! Yes... as other have written... race what ya' brought days are great ! I will dig up a photo of me an my brother racing my 65 GTO against his 67 Vette. Fun day for sure. Just cannot push too hard as 'what ya brought' still needs to be 'what gets ya back home' at the end of all the fun.
BTW.. the day we were at NE Dragway there was a nice to see healthy mix of people 'racing what they brought'. Plenty of kids obviously beating on mom / dads car too !
Jim
Me and brother. We both have 67's. That day i brought the 65 Goat. Other days we bring both vette's. Lots of fun !!!!
It's all fun for sure..

That 65 with the hemi looks like it was 'born to run' !
I guess none of us are too afraid to drive these machines.

I used to race NASCAR short track. This is my old engine. I had to detune it some to be streetable. There was a 358 rule w a single 4 barrel, other than that it was wide open. Man that car was fast !! I changed the carb , intake ,cam and heads also took the dry sump system off. It's still pretty quick, all lightweight components. Wiseco Pro Lites, Crower 6" rods, Hank the Crank crankshaft. It would run 8000 rpm lap after lap. Now I keep it down to 6800, the cam limits it. So does the street !
